Despite not being of Teochew heritage myself, I’ve always had an inclination for Teochew kueh growing up. That’s why I was ecstatic upon discovering Yong Xiang Carrot Cake And Teochew Kueh near Boon Keng MRT Station

This stall puts a slight spin on things by frying your traditional Teochew kueh carrot cake-style as well, probably the first stall that I’ve came across with such a recipe. The way it works is that you get to pick among a selection of soon kueh, png kueh, and ku chai kueh among others, and they’ll fry it on the spot in front of you.

To zhng it up a lil more, be sure to request for them to add eggs to be fried with your kueh, with a dash of that dark sauce and chilli to intensify the sweet and spicy flavours of the dish. This really is a treat for all lovers of sweet-savoury hawker food, myself included.

A plate of fried soon kueh, png kueh, and ku chai kueh altogether should set you back only about $4, and you really get the best of all three worlds.

Though the stall opens really early at 6am, it has its slew of loyal customers and some say that there’s already a steady queue around 7am for their delicacies. Be sure to go as early as you can though, as their delights tend to sell out by noon.

Apart from their specialty fried Teochew kuehs, people also return for their classic black and white carrot cake, starting from $2.50. If not, they’ll go for the chee cheong fun and yam cakes to start their days right, beginning at $0.80.
