While Lala is mostly eaten as an accompaniment or side dish, WaWa Lala Bee Hoon is probably the first specialty store in Singapore that focuses just on these clams.

“Lala” are Venus Clams which are popular for their chewy texture and salty ocean taste, usually eaten steamed or fried with other ingredients such as vegetables or sambal chilli sauce.

Founded by a group of friends for their love for seafood and zi char dishes, Wawa serves up items with paired with interesting sauces from garlic butter to homemade garlic seafood broth.

Having their food is said to make you go excited with “Wa, Wa, Wa”, thus this name (lol).

Also, they were once rated 3 stars “Food King Good” on FoodKing by Night Owl Cinematics.

I first spotted WaWa Lala Bee Hoon (then known as “WaWa SG” and “WaWa Seafood”) at several pop-even events.

After which, they opened their first outlet at Stars Of Kovan at Upper Serangoon Road and was quite well received.

They have recently opened their second at Fortune Centre – known for its numerous vegetarian eateries and of walking distance from Bugis MRT Station.

Signature items include Power Drunken Lala Bee Hoon ($7.90), Fresh Cockles Marinated In Special Sauce ($11.90), Power Sambal Lala With Tasty Rice ($9.90) and Fresh Lala in Home-made Garlic Butter Sauce ($7.90).

Other dishes include Refreshing Clear Lala Soup ($7.90), Fusilli Vongole ($9.90), Power Sambal Lala ($7.90), Fresh Lala Tasty Porridge ($7.90) and Fresh Lala Chawanmushi ($3.90).

WaWa mentioned that they were probably the first in SG to serve Lala Bee Hoon in soup form.

The challenges in live clams are that some may turn out to be ‘sandy’ and spoil the overall eating experience.

Therefore, they even have a seawater tank in both their outlets to keep the clams live and fresh before cooking.

To ensure they are “95% sandless”, they put our clams through a rigorous manual process to sieve out impurities and dead ones, so that every single lala is “almost sandless”.

While I am typically ‘not a lala person’, I found that their clams were clean and fresh tasting, and did not have too many broken shell parts, and this made consumption fairly straightforward without the hassle.

The soup had a pleasant seafood sweetness and appetising wine taste, was flavourful without being too overly rich or salty.

The Power Sambal Lala With Tasty Rice ($9.90) was considered ”shiok” with tasty spiciness, though I wished that the rice could be more fragrant and buttery overall.
