Some Westies may still be unfamiliar with NEWest, an integrated residential and retail development in the west side of Singapore.
There, you can find an eclectic mix of shops with F&Bs such as Simple Cafe 簡單, Petite House, Big Big Fries, Pizza Arc, Hakata Japanese Restaurant, Bird Folks, Igokochi Dining Bar, Lazy Lizard, Lotus Garden Restaurant, Kim Eng Chicken Rice, Los Jefes Tacqueria and Springleaf Prata Place.
Up In Smoke is opened by sister cafe Burnt Cones at Sunset Way, another popular hangout place in the west for cafe hoppers recently, populated by gelato shops including Dawn’s Gelateria and Hundred Acre Creamery.
Here at Up in Smoke, they serve a more extensive menu compared to the ones at Burnt Cones due to their bigger kitchen space.
Most of the gelato flavours are are similar across the two outlets, with 14 artisanal hand-crafted gelato flavours (Single $5, Double $9, Signature +$1, Supremo +$2) on display.
Customers can look forward to Bacio (Hazelnut chocolate), Fior de Latte (Milk), Oreo, Madagascar Vanilla, Earl Grey, Ube (Purple Yam), Scamorza (Smoked cheese), Black Sesame, Butterscotch, 85% Dark Chocolate, Pistachio, Thai Coconut Lychee and Strawberry Basil.
Apart from their signature gelato savoury food such as Brunch with scrambled egg dishes ($6 – $0) are served from 9am to 11am daily whereas Philly Cheesesteaks (Junior $10, Regular $12, Double $18) are available there.
As their name implies, Up in Smoke focuses on smoked items on their menu, namely the Smoked Buttermilk Waffle ($10) and their Scamorza (Smoked cheese) gelato.
Hmm, from the name and the $10 price tag, the Smoked Buttermilk Waffle does burn a hole in the wallet (pun intended).
The Buttermilk waffle is first smoked in sandalwood before trapping the smoke with a glass jar before serving.
Prepare you camera, you will probably need two, one for photos and one for your boomerang shot as the lid get lifted up, revealing the dessert inside.
With a fragrant and smokey aroma, the smoked buttermilk waffle had a savoury, almost bacon-like taste to it, adding some complexity to the usual dessert.
Their buttermilk waffle was as good as I remembered, a thicker cut with a crispy texture on the outside and fluffy on the inside, with aroma from the sandalwood.
The Ube (pronounced as woo-beh), a bright purple yam with a sweet and mellow flavour caught my attention with the intense shade of purple.
The texture was smooth and creamy with it felt like the real sweet potato, except in the form of a gelato.
The Strawberry Basil sorbet was also another favourite, being smooth and non-icy, yet it was rich with herbaceous taste like hawthorn, and refreshingly appetising.
With plans to introduce more brunch items and smoked dishes on their menu, Up in Smoke will be an ideal place for both brunch and late-night supper.
