Small Tables has Ipoh curry mee at Orchard Road

There are a few great Ipoh curry noodle stalls that can be found in Singapore, but few prepare the dish quite like Small Tables. This cafe recently opened along Orchard Road, and offers zhnged-up curry noodles, chee cheong fun and much more.

While the tables are—as the name suggests—on the smaller side, Small Tables is a comfortable and stylish place to enjoy a meal. Its sidewalk cafe concept means you can enjoy the bustling atmosphere of Orchard Road as you sip on some Ipoh-style coffee.

The must-have dish at Small Tables has to be their Ipoh Curry Mee ($20++). Served dry or with soup, this hearty bowl of noodles is full of ingredients such as char siew, siew yoke, braised pig ears, pig skin, and poached prawns. On our visit, the first two were particularly juicy and succulent, so fans of roast meat are sure to enjoy this dish.

As for the noodles themselves, the hor fun in the Ipoh curry mee is made fresh daily in Ipoh, so you can expect them to be silky-smooth. The rich curry base had an exciting spicy kick and a tantalising aroma, bolstering the dish as a whole.

For another dish that hails from the Malaysian city, try the Ipoh Chee Cheong Fun ($12++). Its soft texture is the perfect medium for its piquant sauces: Ipoh curry and a specially-made chilli. The bits of fried beancurd skin add a crunchy burst to each mouthful as well.

But perhaps the most interesting dish of all is the Whole Fish Otah ($28++), which is a whole deboned yellow croaker stuffed with housemade Otah. That means if you dig into the fish, tangy chunks of otah would come up along with the croaker’s sweet flesh.

While you’re there, don’t miss out on their signature Ipoh White Coffee ($7.50++). Each cup is served with a side of freshly-grilled kaya taiyaki.
