Meng Kee Fried Kway Teow has been in operation for over 40 years and has been passed down from one generation to the next. The stall was previously run by a father-and-daughter team before the daughter took over, completely running it by herself to this day. Unlike some stalls that cooked their char kway teow in batches, Meng Kee makes theirs one plate at a time to ensure the consistency is on point.

The Char Kway Teow ($4), is served with slices of lup cheong, cockles, egg, and golden nuggets of pork lard. Leaning toward the sweeter side, there is a good balance of flavours with a pleasant savouriness and spice coming through at the end. As the spice and savouriness linger, it makes each bite incredibly addictive! Although there is smokiness from the wok hei, slightly more of it would have been better to tie the flavours together and elevate it.

As for the pork lard, it adds a beautiful layer of crunch and umami. It could however use a few more of it as well to zhng up the dish. The cockles are plump and fresh, blending well with the flavours of the noodles. Although Meng Kee might not the best, it’s no surprise to see why they’re such a hit among their regulars. Hurry down and try it for yourself today!
