Head down to People’s Park Food Centre to try out this interesting dish. Loh Mei Specialist serves Loh Mei, also known as Loh Kai Yik in Cantonese. Famous in the 1950s and 1960s, this dish used to be sold in a moving cart. Sellers would be going to HDB estates, calling out the name of the dish to get people’s attention. Now, you can only find this dying dish at Loh Mei Specialist.

Head up to the hawker stall, and you will notice a giant pot that is broken down into different segments. In each segment, you will find different ingredients. The key component of Loh Mei is none other than its stew. The dark red stew is actually made out of red fermented soybean paste, and it exudes a distinctive flavour. The stew has a strong fermented soybean taste, and it is a combination of spicy, sweet, and salty.

It is a must to pair the dish with a bowl of white rice in order to neutralise the overall flavour. Some of the ingredients are paired together are pork belly, pig’s intestines, cuttlefish, chicken wings, and tofu puffs. These ingredients are well-cooked with a tender texture! It is very time-consuming to make this old-school Cantonese dish, and it is probably one of the many reasons why it is no longer that popular in this current era.
