Pho Noodle Soup w Sliced Beef & Beef Ball ($9.80)
Available in spicy and non-spicy versions, this pho leans on the meaty side as it features a mix of sliced beef and beef balls.
This main is a complete meal in itself with its flavourful soup, smooth rice noodles, thin slices of beefs, bouncy beef balls, and some fresh greens.
There are also condiments such as beansprouts, lime wedges, mint and chilli padi which you can add to taste.
The deep flavour of the broth comes from long hours of simmering for more than 10 hours.
Bun Noodle w Grilled Lemongrass Chicken and Fried Spring Rolls ($10.80)
Veer away from the piping hot soup and make your dish summer-friendly. Order this noodle dish featuring vermicelli-style noodles (like bee hoon) topped with grilled lemongrass chicken, a Vietnamese delicacy.
Served with 4 cuts of crunchy fried spring rolls, carrot and cucumber strips, fresh lettuce.
Before eating, toss within a specially-made sauce which is part spicy, tangy and sweet and give it a good toss.
I found this of good value as it includes a substantial portion of succulent meat with that lovely herbed flavour, along with deep-fried spring rolls – it is almost like having an additional side dish
Vietnamese Fried Rice ($9.80)
For the rice lover, make sure to try So Pho’s rendition of Vietnamese fried rice. Stir-fried with shallots, beaten egg, beansprouts, capsicum, in-house sauce, and your choice of meats.
You can have either seafood, beef, chicken or vegetables. The seafood version comes with shrimp and sotong.
As to how this Vietnamese Fried Rice is different from the usual Chinese Fried Rice, this has milder flavours as a light touch of spiciness. While there is egg incorporated, you don’t get pieces also them around but instead coats around the strands of rice.
Also, there are some greens incorporated for a fresher taste, along with some pickled vegetables.
Summer Rolls with Prawns, Grilled Chicken & Chicken Ham ($4.80)
A refreshing set of gỏi cuốn (literally “salad rolls”) or Vietnamese spring rolls made with rice paper wrappers.
Light yet filling, each roll is full of fresh veggies like lettuce, carrots, cilantro, mint, basil; rice noodles and cooked prawns, grilled chicken and chicken ham.
What’s special is two types of sauces are provided – sweet chilli sauce (Thai style) and Hoisin sauce.
Mango & Papaya Salad with Crispy Anchovies ($8.80)
A fruity blend of green mangoes and papaya tossed in with fresh chunks of tomato, lettuce, red onions, chili, and peanuts in a salty-sweet dressing.
The sprinkled crispy anchovies add a layer of texture and flavour to this salad appetiser. Served with a deep-fried cracker on the side.
Iced Lemongrass Tea ($3.50) and Soda Chanh ($3.50)
Refresh with a soothing beverage famous in all of Vietnam. Lemongrass stalks are added with green tea to boiling water and allowed to steep.
The result is a green extract with a distinct lemony citrus aroma and herbal, slightly earthy taste. Served ready to cool you down on a sweltering day.
If not, try the Soda Chanh. This Vietnamese limeade is a mix of club soda or sparkling water, freshly squeezed lime juice, and sweetened with sugar syrup. Needs some getting used to, but it is a classic summer drink.
