Smash for Ayam Penyet at Ang Mo Kio

The strict dining-in restrictions turned out to be a blessing in disguise for a handful of businesses, namely food kiosks around Singapore solely relying on takeaways. While the options are aplenty, only few hit the mark. From fresh truffle pasta priced at $8.90 to Korean smashed burgers, the foodie scene now includes Ayam Penyet from Smash at Ang Mo Kio Hub.

Newly opened just this year, the kiosk situated at Basement Two of the heartland mall offers more than seven kinds of penyet. Other than the classic Nasi Ayam Penyet ($7.50), there are also many seafood options such as prawns, fish, and even stingray for those who miss those supper times at BBQ hawker stalls.

Those who prefer a less messy yet crunchy penyet affair can go for the Nasi Ayam Penyet Boneless ($8.50). The chicken is fried to crisp perfection on the outside, while retaining tender and juicy meat on the inside as each piece is smashed before hitting the hot oil.

What further seals the deal is Smash’s clever addition of fragrant rice to the mix. While steamed white rice is usually sufficient to go with the tasty fried chicken and potent sambal chilli, the fluffy flavoured rice used here made it easier to finish the plate to the last grain.

This fried chicken dish is also served with fried tofu, tempeh, and not one but three kinds of sambal. The red one has a solid kick of spice and citrusy undertones, the green ijo is slightly sweeter with the use of green tomatoes, and the darkest sambal is smoky with deeper flavours.

For those who are looking for something different from the usual smashed fried chicken, try the Nasi Bawal Penyet ($10.50), the pomfret, or Nasi Kerapu Penyet ($10.50), the grouper, instead. If you’re big on textures, the fish is more crispy, even compared to the extra battered bits added.

Otherwise, there’s also the mega-portioned U.S.A Set ($13), which stands for udang, sotong, and ayam—like a penyet surf and turf platter. This is great for a party of two. There is also a bigger U.S.A Family Set priced at $30 to feed more people.

Don’t forget to order some Tauhu Goreng ($5.50) or Soto Ayam ($5) to add to your takeaway list or year-end feast at home with a pax of five. If you’re not in the neighbourhood of Ang Mo Kio, Smash also offers free online delivery service with orders over $60.
