The Joo Chiat area is becoming so exciting with many new cafe additions of late.

These include the ocean-blue coloured PRAIRIE by Craftsmen, botanical-themed Tigerlily Patisserie, Common Man Coffee Roasters, Apiary, The Brewing Ground and Mad Roaster.

Sevens Cafe is another new addition to the #EastCoastPlan, just doors away from the new Apiary outlet along the same stretch of shophouses.

Opened by the Sevens Group, a real estate developer and thus the name.

As their property showroom (Sevens Atelier) is directly located next to their cafe at Joo Chiat Place, the latter was initially planned to serve as a spot for clients and customers to sit down for meetings and a quick drink.

Now, diners can appreciate the 40-seaters space designed entirely by themselves.

The interior draws inspiration from sand dunes with waves that mimic the uneven surface of the sand as seen on the ceiling, walls, and bespoke lighting in the main dining hall.

Something different from the usual minimalist, industrial or botanical designs that are commonly seen in local cafes.

With an All-Day Breakfast that starts from 8.30am daily, signatures include 7S Avod ($18), 7S Brekky ($26) and Cheese Toast with Ham ($11).

The Mains are served from 11am with a selection of Bangers – Mash ($22), Gyu Burger ($26), Land/ Sea Protein ($21), Spicy Chicken Burger ($18), Truffle Mac ($18), What The Fish ($23) and Pasta ($18 – $23).

The 7S Avod ($18) came with a slice of crispy sourdough topped with bits of avocado, quail egg, hazelnut for the crunch, Roma tomatoes and baby beets, beautifully plated like a mini garden.

I was pretty impressed with the fineer details, using an earthly muted tone for all their table wares, accentuated by rose gold metallic utensils that is in line with their colour scheme.

The sourdough slice was toasted before serving, adding some crisp to the edges, yet fluffy on the inside.

Though the knife was slightly too small to cut through the crispy sourdough, the attentive staff noticed it and took the initiative to change it to a sharper knife.

The different components complemented well with one another, well-executed with a good balance of flavours and textures.

All their bakes are made in house, mostly on display at the front counter.

Check out the wide selection of pastries such as Loaf Cake ($6.90), Muffin ($4.90), Blueberry Tart ($9.90), Citron Tart ($7.90), Kyoto – Hojicha Roll ($7.90), Panna Cotta ($7.90 – $8.90).

The Kyoto ($7.90) is a Swiss roll made of Hojicha sponge, whipped cream with a Hojicha jelly in the middle, topped with fresh cream and a single edible gold foil as a finishing touch.

Freshly made daily, the sponge layer was very soft, fluffy and moist, though slightly on the sweeter side.

The whipped cream used is also infused with Hojicha (roasted green tea), fragrant and light without being too jelak (rich).

The strongest flavour within the Swiss roll was in the Hojicha jelly, more earthly and robust with distinctive tea notes.

I was half-expecting it to be Warabi Mochi instead, more Japanese-inspired with a chewier texture in contrast to the soft and airy sponge cake.

Other dessert choices include the Panna Cotta available in Berries ($8.90), Pandan ($7.90) and Mango ($8.90), Oven Baked Brownies ($12) and Golden Pancakes ($12).

The Pandano Panna Cotta ($7.90) had pandan infused within the Panna cotta, served with bits of coconut jelly on top and gula melaka syrup served on the side.

The Panna Cotta was smooth and bouncy, with detectable notes of pandan flavours within.

The coconut jelly was also fragrant, adding a firmer but wobbly texture in contrast to the soft Panna Cotta.

A single origin espresso bean from Sumatra, roasted by Glyph Supply Co., is used for their espresso-based drinks: Espresso ($4), Black ($5), White ($5.50) and Mocha ($6.50).

Add-ons such as Espresso shot (+$1), Iced (+$1), Oat Milk (+$1.50) are available.

My cup of Flat White ($5.50) contains a single shot of espresso, smooth, medium-bodied with notes of raisins, papaya, jackfruit and chocolate.

Single origins beans from Ethiopia, Peru and Bolivia are used for their filtered coffee, roasted by independent coffee roaster, Cata Coffee.

Alternatively, Sevens Cafe also serves a wide selection of non-coffee drinks such as Tea ($7 – $8), Matcha/ Hojicha/ Chocolate (Hot $6.50), Iced $7.50), Elderflower Raspberry/ Mango Passionfruit Soda ($7) and Iced Dirty Matcha/ Hojicha ($8).

Coincidentally, Sevens Cafe is also opened seven days a week, starting from 8.30am which serves as an ideal breakfast spot for those who start their day early.
