Located at 33 Sultan Gate off Beach Road, Seow Choon Hua Restaurant is an old-school eatery which is famous for its Foo Chow dishes including Red Glutinous Rice Wine Chicken (Hong Zao Ji) and handmade Foo Chow fish balls.
When we asked for recommendations on where to find the best Red Glutinous Rice Wine Chicken in Singapore, most people pointed us to Seow Choon Hua Restaurant. Needless to say, we had to make a trip there to try it for ourselves.
Seow Choon Hua Restaurant specialises in Red Glutinous Rice Wine Chicken, Foo Chow Fish Ball, Foo Chow Dumpling and Foo Chow New Year Cake.
Most of the dishes on Seow Choon Hua Restaurant’s menu are priced between S$5 – S$6.
Red Glutinous Rice Wine Chicken, or more commonly known as Hong Zao Ji, is one popular confinement food to eat, as its health properties include expelling wind, warming and nourishing the body while promoting blood circulation.
As it is a difficult dish to make, with a tedious fermentation process to speak of, this dish is pretty hard to find in Singapore.
But this old-school and nondescript restaurant has preserved its traditional methods of making Hong Zao Ji and it is easily one of the best Red Glutinous Rice Wine Chickens in Singapore, though we would have preferred it to be slightly spicier with more ginger. But for S$5 a bowl, there was really nothing to complain about.
We loved it and will totally go back for a hearty bowl.
We also had the Wanton Noodles with Foo Chow Fish Balls. Unlike the usual Wanton Noodles, their rendition came with additional fish cake, as well as handmade Foo Chow fish balls and Foo Chow dumplings.
The next time you find yourself craving for Red Glutinous Rice Wine Chicken & Foo Chow Fish Balls, head over to Seow Choon Hua at Beach Road.
