If you have kept a lookout for Japanese food at Takashimaya basement during the last decade (gosh, has been that long), you would have noticed Romankan Yokohama. (Also read: 10 Tasty Tonkatsu In Singapore)
This is a casual Japanese eatery that serves made-to-order Tonkatsu, Japanese Curry Rice and Katsu Sando – breaded pork smeared lightly in mustard and nestled between slices of soft, white bread.
The tonkatsu specialist joins scores of Japanese restaurants in the mall including as Nozomi by Yoshi, Chirashi King Kong, Sandaime Bunji, Gochi-So Shokudo, Gyu Jin Shabu Shabu, Kurama Robatayaki, Saboten, and Sho Yakitori.
If you have never dined at Romankan before, it is quite a no-frills Japanese eatery known for its friendly and sincere service, providing food at inexpensive prices.
The prices are nett, and have barely increased over the years.
Available items on the menu include Rosu Katsu Teisyoku ($16) which are fried pork-loin cutlet, Fillet Katsu Teisyoku ($17), Katsu Curry Teisyoku ($18), Chicken Katsu Teisyoku ($14.50), Rosu Katsu Ni Teisyoku ($18), and Ebi-Fry Teisyoku ($18.50).
Served with potato wedges and boiled broccoli, I won’t say that the pork cutlet pieces of the Katsu Curry Teisyoku ($18) were ultra-crispy, but were dependable, flavourful and tender enough. Note that the pork used was more to the lean side.
The curry was served separately to be poured over, and tasted house-made, thick and only mildly spicy.
There could be more robust flavours (if you compare to other well-known brands), but this was considered pretty-decent.
The item most would go for is the Rosu Katsu Ni Teisyoku ($18.00) – pork cutlet covered in egg and a special sauce served on hot plate.
This uses a richer cut of pork that comes with a strip of fat along the side, and you get some contrast between the deep-fried pieces and stewed gravy with soft onions.
Also available during lunch are more affordable bowls, such as Hire Katsudon ($12), Ebi & Fish ($16.50) and Ebi Don Sets ($13.50).
