Raffles Place food spots

The hustle and bustle of the CBD mostly happen during weekday lunch hours. Every weekday, streams of office ladies and gentlemen raid the area looking for grub to fuel them for the day ahead. From the quick and cheap to the payday splurge, here are 18 Raffles Place food places that will cater to any budget.

1. Salmon Samurai

Salmon Samurai offers affordable and value-for-money salmon donburi. A sister restaurant of Tanuki Raw, they target hungry office workers who have little time but want a hearty to-go meal.

At just $10.90, you can customise and create your bowl of Salmon Donburi from the choice of staple to the type of salmon. For the base, you can choose between mixed grain brown rice, udon noodles, and salad; for the salmon, you have the option of sashimi, salmon mentaiko, garlic shoyu, salmon poke, or spicy salmon poke. Sliced fresh every day, the salmon sashimi here is a popular option.

2. Hans Im Glück

Hans Im Glück elevates the humble burger into a healthy, nutritious and delicious meal. While German fare is typically famed for their meats, this burger grill chain from Germany is known for their extensive menu of vegetarian and vegan options.

Choose between sourdough and multigrain buns when you order your burger. Alternatively, if you’re watching your waistline, you can opt for their naked burger too. The Birkenwald ($21++), a combination of earthy mushrooms and a thick and juicy beef patty, is a popular burger here. You can also make it into a set with a side dish and a non-alcoholic drink with an additional $6.

3. WHEAT Baumkuchen

Serving Japanese and Asian style salads, WHEAT Baumkuchen is the place to go if you’re intending to eat clean and healthy. What stands out here is their generous portions and the wide variety of ingredients offered.

The Grilled Salmon Soba ($12.90) is the most popular item on the menu. The soba has a firmer texture than most cold noodles, and comes topped with a thick slab of salmon. Their Coriander Pesto Chicken Rice ($11.90) is complete with grilled chicken, red rice, onsen egg and mushrooms and pickled tomatoes. This hearty dish will definitely fill you up, and keep your calories in check.

4. Gochi-So Shokudo

No place of Raffles Place food spots is complete without Gochi-So Shokudo which offers a wide range of menu items such as Iberico don, steak, curry rice and tonkatsu, and kaisendon. The most popular orders here are from the Charcoal Grill Iberico Don range.

The Iberico Pork Jowl Don ($13.50) is by far the most popular, while the Iberico Pork Belly Don ($9.80) is the most value-for-money. If you prefer tonkatsu, opt for the Bellota Iberico Loin Katsu ($17.50) or the Bellota Loin Katsu & Cheese Katsu ($21.50) that comes oozing with melted cheese.

Address: 1 Raffles Place, #B1-30, One Raffles Place Tower 2 Singapore 048616

5. The Providore

The Providore in Raffles Place is a unique glasshouse cafe that is also their flagship café-cum-retail outlet. They serve Breakfast from 8am to 11:30am on weekdays, Sandwiches from 11:30am to 5pm, Salads & Starters and Mains from 11:30am to 10pm, along with all-day Bread & Pastries for a quick snack or takeaway. Popular orders here include the Club Sandwich ($18.50++) and Lobster Mac & Cheese ($27.50++). My personal favourite is the Roasted Chicken Leg ($28.5++) with Baharat spice, couscous, house-made aubergine chutney and minted yoghurt. This with a guilty serving of Roasted Sweet Potato Wedges with Garlic Aioli ($12.5++), and that’s splurge day, sorted!

6. Kotobuki

For a quiet meal on the fourth floor of One Raffles Place, make a beeline for overflowing sashimi bowls at Kotobuki. Those looking to get more bang for their buck should spring for lunch sets such as the Kagoshima Tonkatsu Set ($18++) and the grilled salmon Sake Shioyaki Set ($18++).

But if you’re here for quality sashimi, go for the a-la-carte options as the lunch options are inadequate. The Sashimi Don ($22++) comes with thick slices of assorted sashimi, while their Insta-worthy Aburi Sake Bakumori Don ($26++) comes overflowing with sashimi cubes and mentaiko, all torched to a golden brown.

7. Souperstar

Soup might be in their name, but the real stars in Souperstar are actually the healthy fusion popiah. Building from their family popiah business, the sister-owners started out Souperstar selling popiah wraps and soups, branching to salads and sandwiches later on.

The popiah wraps are handmade fresh daily, and come in a variety of flavours with the Sesame Chicken ($5.10) as the darling of the bunch. If you’re going low-carb, opt for the salads or the hearty soups from Creamy Tomato Basil, Souper Shroomy to the Classic French Onion. The soups come in three sizes of Medium ($5.90) and Large ($8.40) and Extra Large ($16.50). But mind you, all the soups are quite indulgentnot the best for a diet.

8. Waa Cow

The flame torch is the weapon of choice at Waa Cow, a tiny hidden gem that specialises in flame-torched Wagyu beef bowls. Pick your Wagyu flavour from Original ($20.90), Mentai ($22.90), Spicy Mentai ($23.90), Truffle ($22.90) and Yuzu Fois Gras ($25.90). Don’t bother adding $5 to make it into a set with a side dish, unless you’re really keen, as the donburi already comes with cabbage salad, an onsen egg and hot green tea. The wagyu is sous-vide before being aburi-ed with their moreish house sauce. Other non-beef bowls include the popular Mentaiko Salmon Poke Set ($17.40) and the vegetarian Truffle Mushroom Set ($14.90).

The most popular bases include the Burrito (from $7.90), and the Burrito Bowl (from $7.90) that comes with the same ingredients as the former but with rice instead of a tortilla. For drinks, try their selection of Jarritos ($4), a brand of flavoured sodas imported from Mexico.

For filling Indonesian fare at hawker prices, head to Gado & Grill. They have a small branch at One Raffles Place with a simple menu of only six dishes including Gado Gado ($6.00+) and Ayam Penyet ($7.00+). Their GadoMie ($6.30+) is their most popular dish featuring Indomie-style noodles served with gado gado staples: meat, a sunny side egg, prawn chips and greens. For an extra $2, you can make this into a meal with a choice of Teh Botol or Honey Lime Juice. There’s no service charge if you decide to eat in, but there are only a few seats at the outlet, so it’s best to get takeaway.

The set menu comes with a mini rice bowl, a choice of hot or cold soba, and a cup of tea. Kaisen-don, Teriyaki Salmon and Sobaya no Curry Don are just some of the choices available.
