Oh, the famous Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee at Old Airport Road Food Centre has opened a full-fledged eatery at Balestier.

Good news: it opens till 9pm or till sold out (compared to 1pm or earlier at the food centre.

The other interesting aspect is that Ryan Tan, better known to be the boss behind Night Owl Cinematics and Food King, is co-owner of this new Lor Mee eatery.

Additional note: some other famous LOR MEE stalls In Singapore include Keng Heng Whampoa Teo Chew Lor Mee (Golden Mile Food Centre), Feng Zhen Lor Mee (Taman Jurong Food Centre), Lor Mee 178 (Tiong Bahru Food Centre), Amoy St Lor Mee 厦门街卤面 (Whampoa Food Centre).

Regulars of the popular Youtube programme will know this Lor Mee stall is rated 3 star “Food King Good” and Ryan “will live and die by this place”.

Towkay Ryan revealed that having Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee is one of the few treasured memories he had with his mum, after she introduced him to eat at this stall when he was 5 years’ old.

When he finally had a car, the first place he drove to eat was also this stall.

Being around since 1973, there are 3 sizes – Normal ($6), Large ($8), and Foodking All-in-Bowl ($10). The last bowl was “sold out” quite early in the day.

Wait was closed to an hour for me (even though I know boss, I still have to queue okay? lol). Customers who arrived shortly after noon time were told to come back later after certain ingredients ran out.

There are four choices of noodles – flat yellow wheat noodles, round yellow wheat noodles, kway teow, and bee hoon.

Interestingly, there are eight boxes for “remove toppings” requests, such as bean sprouts, coriander, garlic, vinegar, chilli, pork, braised egg and fried fish flakes. I overheard one customer removed 5 of the 8 ingredients. What?! Is this still Lor Mee?

The gravy was packed separately from the rest of the bowl, and for $8, portion was quite substantial and filling. Noted that there was a lot of gravy, good for one and a half bowls if you ration well.

This Lor Mee came with hard boiled eggs, crunchy bean sprouts, as well as chopped red chillies, sambal chili and Chinese parsley for some heat and freshness. (Without the usual ngo hiang or fish fritters)

The sauce, a key element in a good Lor Mee, continued to be quite unlike any others I had before – thick and flavourful as it was prepared with five-spice and other seasonings.

The balance of being vinegary and spicy was done balanced – just right, not too strong in either aspect. A friend commented that was this after taste that tasted like Chinese wine.

I never intended to finish that sauce but I did anyway. While some customers may feel it is on the plain side, it was not as starchy and didn’t give me that uncomfortable-greasy feeling.

Unlike the medium and large bowls, the small bowl is served without flaked fish.

If you like the pan-fried fish (red snapper) in your Lor Mee, go for the bigger bowls with the hand-peeled fish – which makes this different from the average bowl.
