Better known for its hawker food and supper places, especially those at Bedok 85 (Fengshan Food Centre), Bedok is now the hot spot for new cafes.

Some of the latest additions include local dessert shop Man Tang Hong 满糖红, and ice cream shops Hay Gelato, Lick D Cream, Scoop of Joy, FatCat Ice Cream Bar, Denzy Gelato, and Haute And Cauld.

Wow, that’s quite a handful of ice cream shops in Bedok. Now, add one more… La Creamery at 55 Chai Chee Drive.

At a first glance, La Creamery may look like a normal neighbourhood ice cream shop, with a simple white and baby pink 22-seaters space that is not deemed as “instagrammable” in today’s term.

I decided to give it a try since I was in the area and entered the shop without any expectation.

And, I was glad I made the right decision.

There are actually many items on the menu that seemed interesting and looked promising.

These include their Pu-Erh Waffles ($5), Honey Thyme Cone ($1), Ice Cream flavours (Single $3.80, Double $7, Triple $10, Premium +$1) – Lemongrass Ginger, Osmanthus Jasmine and White Chrysanthemum.

These botanical-flavoured waffles, cones and ice cream are made in-house in small batches, with rotating flavours every 3 weeks.

Classic ice cream flavours (Single $3.80, Double $7, Triple $10) include Caramelised Earl Grey, Mango Passionfruit, Vanilla Bean, Dark Chocolate, Lemongrass Ginger, Osmanthus Jasmine, Lemonade Sorbet and Cookies & Cream.

As for the premium flavours (Single $4.80, Double $9, Triple $13), you can expect White Chrysanthemum (which reminded me of Birds Of Paradise), Mao Shan Wang, Speculoos, Rocky Road and Lychee Raspberry Rose.

My favourite was the Osmanthus Jasmine, a milk-based ice cream infused with osmanthus and jasmine flowers, which turned out to be light and refreshing.

Even though the milk may seem to overwhelm the flavours, it actually complemented well with the fragrant botanical notes from the flowers.

The Lychee Raspberry Rose on the other hand, has a stronger floral taste profile with streaks of raspberry in it to enhance the citrus notes.

The ice creams are available for pairing with their freshly made Honey Thyme Cone ($1), Classic Waffles ($5) or Pu-Erh Waffles ($5).

The Pu-Erh Waffles ($5) got me excited as this is my first time coming across a tea flavoured waffle since buttermilk is the norm.

Infusing Pu-Erh, a Chinese Tea that originates from Yunnan, China, into the waffle batter, the Pu-Erh Waffles ($5) is crispy on the outside with a more chewy texture on the inside.

The thick-cut waffles had an obvious tea taste and aroma in every bite, flavourful on its own.

Keep a lookout for their Seasonal Waffles ($5.50) available only on special festive occasions such as Christmas or Halloween.

While La Creamery might not be the most Instagrammable cafe for an #OOTD shot, they serve unique, interesting and promising flavours on their menu that are uncommon elsewhere.
