From a mobile coffee cart for corporate, weddings and pop-up events to their first brick-and-mortar shop at Joo Chiat, King’s Cart Coffee has opened their second outlet at Bishan Public Library.
Located on the first floor of the library, head to the rear entrance as the cafe (as the library is not linked directly due to SafeEntry regulations).
Compared to their outlet at Joo Chiat, the space has increased to accommodate 50 pax, with a similar concept that houses both the cafe and a product showroom in the same space.
Focusing on coffee-centric food, bakes and desserts, coffee is used as a key ingredient in many dishes.
These include the coffee mascarpone in the Tiramisu and Matcha Souffle ($18.90), Coconut Affogato ($7) and a good selection of artisanal drinks.
Brunch menu is pretty limited with only Scrambled Egg on Toast ($11) and some sides such as Truffle Fries ($10), Mentaiko Fries ($12) and Cheesy Melt Fries ($12).
Their Inspirations menu consists of artisanal drinks such as Salt Caramel Latte ($8), Coconut Latte ($8), Coconut Cold Brew ($9), Summer Yuzu Tonic ($9) and Sun Kisses ($9).
The Salt Caramel Latte ($8) was my favourite, an espresso-based drink with homemade caramel sauce and speculoos crumbles added to the edges of the cup.
The latte was smooth and medium bodied, with nutty notes enhanced by the earthly profile of the crumbles.
The espresso-based selection can be found on the menu, with a choice of 2 beans, either from Brazil & Lintong or Costa Rica, roasted in-house.
The former has a more earthly, chocolatey and nutty notes; whereas the latter is more citrusy and fruity.
I had the Iced Dirty Matcha Latte ($8) that came with 3 distinctive layers of matcha, milk and espresso.
Unfortunately sweetened with syrup, I would have personally preferred more distinctive matcha notes though.
A good selection of cakes and bakes are displayed at the counter, ranging from Cinnamon & Raisin Pinwheels ($6.50) to Ondeh Ondeh Cake ($9), Honey Sweet Potato Cake ($9), Carrot Cake ($9), Bubble Gum Cake ($9), Red Velvet Cake ($9) and Apple Crumble Muffin ($6).
Both the Bubble Gum Cake ($9) and Honey Sweet Potato Cake ($9) have pretty and distinctive colourful layers, placed on the colourful and quirky plates that is also available for sale.
I was curious as how the Bubble Gum Cake ($9) would turn out, which looked “interesting” with the colourings and does sounded a bit funky.
Infused with bubblegum flavour in both the sponge cake and the fresh cream, the taste almost reminded me of a real bubblegum.
Even though I enjoyed the moist and soft layers of sponge cake, the amount of fresh cream could be too much for me, with almost half the cake made of cream.
The Honey Sweet Potato Cake ($9) was the better choice, with sweet potato embedded within the layers of cream.
There was a pleasant contrast between the soft purple sweet potato sponge with bits of sweet chewy potato embedded within.
I enjoyed their coffee items more, such as the Coconut Affogato ($7) that came with coconut ice cream with toasted coconut flakes and an espresso shot.
The sweetness from the coconut ice cream was well-balanced by the robust bitterness from the espresso shot, with crunch from the coconut flakes added.
Kings Cart Coffee should be a relaxing spot to chill with a book borrowed from the library next door on hand, spending a quiet afternoon having their interesting coffee-inspired drinks.
