It is hard to miss with the large flashy signboard compelling you to get a steamy bowl of Lor Mee at Golden Mile Food Centre.

Keng Heng Whampoa Teo Chew Lor Mee 慶興黃埔潮州鹵麵 is easily one of the most popular stalls there; and no matter what time of the day you visit the stall, you will always be met with snaking long queues.

You may have to wait a good half an hour for your order even on weekdays.

Additional note: some other famous LOR MEE stalls In Singapore include Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee (Old Airport Road Food Centre), Feng Zhen Lor Mee (Taman Jurong Food Centre), Lor Mee 178 (Tiong Bahru Food Centre) and Amoy St Lor Mee 厦门街卤面 (Whampoa Food Centre).

Now, good news for Westies.

There is a new stall at Blk 116 Bukit Merah View (kopitiam right next to Bukit Merah View Food Centre, with another at Ghim Moh.

The classic Teochew style Lor Mee at the food centre is priced at $3 – $5 which I found reasonable.

Pricing seems to be slightly different at the kopitiam, ranging from $4 – $6 (reasonable considering inflation. The large portion size was quite huge and shareable if you are not too hungry.

You can also top up with Fried Fish Skin, Fried Fish Fritters, Fried Wanton, Xi Dao Fish Cake or Ngoh Hiang, for $2 – $3 extra.

The bowl was loaded with savoury pork belly, ngoh hiang, fishcakes, fried wantons and chunks of crispy golden fish pieces.

The other special thing is the crispy fish skin which is not commonly found in other Lor Mee stalls. Don’t soak it inside too long, so that you can appreciate some of the layered crunch.

As for the gravy, it had a distinct sweetish taste of its own with the same starchy thickness its loyal fans all know and love.

I found the consistency quite balanced – not too thick or thin (won’t get diluted too halfway eating).

It was overall more garlicky than the average. However, I wished there was more burst of flavours (I call that ‘magic’) to give the bowl that added edge.

Add some of those extra condiments from minced garlic, chilli padi to their homemade sambal belacan.

Oh yah, may want to go easy on the chilli as it can get overwhelmingly spicy.
