Acoustics Coffee Bar opens new cafe in Farrer Park

Cafe girlies would know that Joo Chiat and Everton Park are some of the best places to check out for a chill brunch date. But the real ones would always include Farrer Park on their cafe-hopping list—this area has seen a new lease of life with trendy cafes such as Poonsti and Hey Slow Joe. Good news, there’s another new cafe to check out this weekend: Acoustics Coffee Bar! If this name rings a bell, it’s because their first outlet is in Outram Park.

During our tasting, my colleague and I were served three mains, three drinks, and a dessert. Let’s start with the mains: we tried the Nasi Bakar ($18+), then Truffle Cheese Toasties ($20+), and Cauliflower Steak ($15+)

Fun fact: the cafe’s Nasi Bakar was created by MasterChef finalist Mandy Kee! This local delight features a bed of aromatic lemak rice and coconut-spiced chicken wrapped in a banana leaf, accompanied by a side of mixed vegetable pickle.

Then there’s our favourite—the Truffle Cheese Toasties with an incredible cheese pull. Three types of cheese are used to make the toast, namely comte, cheddar, and mozzarella. We really liked the winning combination of truffle, cheese, and caramelised onions, and thought the latter played a huge role in giving the toastie a nice sweet-salty balance.

Cauliflower Steak isn’t novel, but we were surprised to see this dish in a cafe as it’s typically served in restaurants. You get a huge charred cauliflower drenched in a piquant chimichurri sauce, and a generous dollop of hummus to dip it in. We recommend sharing this with your dining companion as a side.

Moving on to dessert, the Pandan Tiramisu ($16+) is another creative product by the MasterChef finalist. Unlike regular tiramisus, which requires you to scoop with a spoon, this dessert is eaten like how you would eat a waffle: with a fork and knife.

Their Asian-inspired tiramisu is sort of like a DIY project where you get to add as much espresso, pandan sabayon, toasted coconut, and sweet potato powder as you like. To our surprise, the sweet potato powder was mildly sweet in flavour, complementing well with the pandan sabayon.

My favourite thing about this new cafe was their drinks. We got the Lychee Nojito ($8+), Dark Cloud ($8+), and Houjicha Cloud ($9+). My colleague and I agreed that the Houjicha Cloud was our favourite—you get an iced hojicha latte topped with a thick, sweet cream, dusted with hojicha powder as the finishing touch. We appreciated that there was a good balance of roasted bitterness and creamy sweetness in this beverage. Their Lychee Nojito was also a lovely treat to quench our thirst after walking under the sun!

The cafe is divided into two sections: the seats nearer to the entrance come with power plugs, which make for a perfect spot to get work done, while the seats nearer to the counter are ideal for those visiting in a group of four or more. If minimalist, wood-themed cafes are your kind of vibe, Acoustics Coffee Bar in Farrer Park is worth a visit.

For more cafes to visit in the area, read our Cafe Ren review, where we tried scallop and truffle cold pasta, and sweet potato latte. There’s also Three Cheers Patisserie for pandan kaya macarons, almond butter tarts and more.
