We have written about many hidden cafes in Singapore found at more obscure places, but this is another found right within a mall.
55 Degree Celsius is located right at Level 1 of Harbourfront Centre, though there is not much social media buzz about it. (This is not to be confused with Degree Celsius at Penang Road.)
While next door VivoCity enjoys a healthy flow of human traffic, the shops at Harbourfront Centre seemed comparatively quieter.
The café opens from 8am in the morning – great for the working crowd in the vicinity, and offers a variety of specialty coffee which are sourced from Sarnies and Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee.
According to them, coffee is best enjoyed at approximately 55 degrees Celsius.
Beverage items include the usual Latte ($5.50), Flat White ($5.50), Cappuccino ($5.50), Mocha ($6), to Matcha Latte ($5.50) and Taro Latte ($5.50). Iced versions are at a dollar extra.
While I found Taro Latte elsewhere a hit-or-miss (usually too diluted or powdery), this Iced Taro Latte here was aromatic and creamy, with sweet nutty flavour.
Pastries and desserts are outsourced from other places. What you can look out for are cookies from Folks and Stories, with flavours of dark chocolate sea salt, milk and dark chocolate, matcha and white chocolate, to yuzu cheesecake. Each is priced from $3.90 to $4.20.
There were pastries of Butter Croissant ($3.90), Almond Croissant ($4.50), Kaya Croissant ($4.50), Pain Au Chocolate ($4.50) and Raisin Swirl ($4.50). As I recognised where the pastries were from and also recently had them, I gave a miss this time (but they are generally not bad).
Available cake flavours when I visited were Thai Milk Tea, Earl Grey Lavender and Okinawa Milk Tea Cake. Each slice is priced at $7.80.
I quite enjoyed the Earl Grey Lavender Cake with delicately-fragrant tea infused cake layers, along with smooth lavender cream cheese, topped with dried lavender petals. The flavour notes were subtle, not too strong such that the tea flavour would overpower.
Perhaps due to storage, the Thai Milk Tea Cake had a rather dry sponge texture, though the layers of Chantilly cream alternating with Thai milk tea cream was quite appealing. Not too sweet as well.
There is currently a buy one drink, get a slice of cake free promotion, though limited to first 80 slices.
Also when I visited early morning, there were only 2 slices left and I was informed that the stock would only arrive late afternoon.
So check their social media handles for updates and other promotions – which they do launch regularly.
