New restaurants this May 2021

Even as we transition into a new month, Singapore hasn’t been slowing down on the food front, with new eateries popping up left and right. If you’re looking for fresh spots to dine at, here are 15 new restaurants in Singapore this May 2021, including a gorgeous pink-themed cafe, and mahjong-themed dessert place.

1. Fei Zhu Lok Lok

new restaurants may 2021 - fei zhu lok lok

While we can’t cross the border for some lok lok right now, head down to Fei Zhu Lok Lok to get your fill of the popular Malaysian street snack. Here, there are over 20 skewered meats and vegetables to choose from, priced at $1 each. To accompany your skewers, there are four sauces available, of which we enjoyed their house-made sauce, and an unnamed, mayo-based dip. For some carbs to go along with your meal, opt for the Shiok Rice ($1) or Shiok Noodles ($1).

2. A Beautiful Day

new restaurants may 2021 - a beautiful day ambience

A Beautiful Day is easily one of the most gorgeous cafes we’ve visited, with a pink corner that’s adorned in neon decals, seashell-shaped chairs, and a floral telephone booth.

In line with the pink theme of this cafe, be sure to get the Pink Sugar’s Bandung Souffle Pancake ($17.90). This comes dressed with rose-flavoured cream and dried rose petals, served on a pink mirrored tray. There’s also the Red Velvet Latte ($7+), a dark pink-coloured drink, if you’d like to take the pink obsession to the next level. Otherwise, the dish we enjoyed most was their Peri Peri Chicken Don ($10.90+), which highlights a bright, piquant peri peri sauce.

If, like me, you’re a mahjong fanatic, head down to Tian Wang Desserts, a cafe that’s decked in mahjong tile wallpaper.

Here, you can expect an array of traditional Chinese desserts, of which we enjoyed their Yam Paste With Pumpkin & Gingko ($4.80), aka orh nee. If you’d like something refreshing, there’s the Soursop Popping ($4.80), with soursop fruit and syrup-filled boba pearls atop shaved ice. Fair warning, this can be a little too sweet for some.

Maki-ing their debut on the menu are the Avocado Ebi Roll ($16.80++) and Salted Egg Roll ($16.80++), which make for good sharing plates on the table. Meanwhile, meat lovers can opt for the Wagyu Beef Don ($19.80++), with marbled beef doused in a savoury-sweet sauce, alongside garlic chips and a runny onsen egg.

Be transported to Japan at Taki Izakaya, with torii gates that line the entrance, and a cascading virtual waterfall to boot. Here, you can expect an array of alcoholic beverages, and scrumptious bar bites to go along with. We particularly enjoyed their Hanami ($16.80++), which sees kanpachi sashimi dressed in ponzu sauce and a sakura gel.

For a dose of carbs, consider the Spring Garden ($16.80++)—a wok hei-laden affair, comprising genmaicha-infused rice, fried with maitake mushrooms and carrots. Pair this with their Sloe Dancing ($33.80++), a fiery cocktail that’s made with two types of gin, sakura syrup, lime juice, Prosecco, and then finished with chilli flakes.

Here at their new location in VivoCity, you can now dig into their signature Creamy Butter Sri Lankan Crab Topped With Coconut Crumbs ($9.50++ per 100g). We enjoyed the savoury-sweet butter sauce in this dish, made fragrant with curry leaves, lemongrass, white pepper, and chilli padi.

Crabs aside, the other seafood dishes at this restaurant are not to be missed. These include the Poached Live Tiger Prawns With Chinese Herbs In Superior Stock ($29++ for 300g), simmered in rice wine, hua diao wine, and Chinese herbs.

Katong is a foodie haven, lined with numerous eateries, with one being The Communal Place. This restaurant has launched a new miso-centric menu, including a decadent Foie Gras # Miso ($23++), which sees linguine tossed in miso cream, topped with seared foie gras and capelin roe. There are also seasonal miso specials, of which we tried the Miso Pork Belly ($14++), made umami with the addition of miso.

End your meal on a sweet note with the Miso Pancake ($17++), served with berries, cookie crumble, and a savoury-sweet miso syrup.

11. Tiong Bahru Bakery The Foothills

Tiong Bahru Bakery has become a household name for quality French pastries, growing from strength to strength since their flagship in Eng Hoon Street. Continuing that reign is the latest Tiong Bahru Bakery outlet in The Foothills, at Fort Canning Park, just a couple of minutes away from Fort Canning MRT Station. Given that the space used to be an old swimming complex, the outlet is themed with swimming decor, albeit in TBB’s signature green-and-white colour palette.

For those of you going “another TBB outlet?”, let us take you through the differences. Yes, the standalone bakery will have all the brand’s best-selling favourites, but they also stock some exclusives. These include the Sourdough Croissant ($4.80), where denser sourdough meets the flaky whorls of a croissant and finished with a Nutella-esque hazelnut cremeux. On the beverage front, quench your thirst with the Sourdough Kvass ($5), available in thyme or mint. Like a thicker version of kombucha, this sourdough-based beverage is quite the quencher.

Address: The Foothills, #01-05 70 River Valley Road, Singapore 179037
Opening hours: Daily 7:30am to 7pm

12. JAM By Siri House

new restaurants may 2021 - jam siri house

Step away from the bustle of town’s mainstream brunch locations and head over to JAM By Siri House, with their recently launched Weekend Brunch menu that is worth getting up on a weekend for. Asian fusion is the stronghold of the menu, with both small and large plates to share with your loved ones.

new restaurants may 2021 - jam by siri house toast

We loved the Arancini ($21++), a twist on the Italian staple with flavours that harkened to takoyaki, from the bits of octopus within each deep-fried ball, to the dashi-soaked Japanese rice used. For something more substantial, get the Katsu Burger ($29++), where a chunky slab of Iberico pork ribeye is dressed with piquant smoked chilli and nori mayo, then finished with pickled cabbage in between lightly toasted buns. Otherwise, their Spring Toast ($23++) is as pretty as a picture, and a level-up from typical toast, with goat’s cheese, an onsen egg, and a well-seasoned mushroom medley up top.

To sweeten the deal, JAM By Siri House has also launched an ultra-wallet friendly $12++ cocktail menu. Perk yourself up with spritzes like the Summertime Madness, an Aperol Spritz lightened by calamansi, or their Caffeinated Martini, made with dark rum, and a coffee liqueur crafted from Kopi O Kosong steeped for 10 hours.

13. No Horse Run

Here’s a new late-night dessert spot for Northies—No Horse Run, cheekily named after the Hokkien phrase, bo beh zao. You can expect a slew of localised gelato flavours at this cafe, of which we enjoyed the Muah Chee ($5), speckled with crunchy peanut bits. Pair this with the Pandan Gula Melaka Waffles ($6.50) for a truly Singaporean twist on your dessert. Every order of waffles also comes with one of their four house-made sauces, that include Classic Maple Syrup, Childhood Milo, House-Made Jam, and Caramelised Cookie.

After a month-long hiatus, SUN With MOON Japanese Dining And Cafe has recently reopened its doors to the public, with new set meals available for lunch and dinner. If you’re a meat-lover, opt for the Three Kind Meat Mix Kamameshi Set ($26.80++), with beef yakiniku, chicken teriyaki, and pork galbi served in an iron pot, alongside flavoured rice and a trio of sides. Meanwhile, if you’re a sushi purist, there’s a Premium Sushi Moriwase Set ($43.80++) available, packed with fatty tuna, yellowtail, uni, scallop, and other oceanic goodies.

What’s more, the restaurant now sees a spanking new speciality cafe, that features a selection of teas imported directly from Japan, as well as bites to go along with. We enjoyed the experience of grilling our own Yaki Dango ($9.80++), aka rice dumplings. These are glazed with sweet soy sauce, then served with red beans and chestnut paste. Sweet-toothed readers will also enjoy the Zensai Parfait ($9.80++), layered with vanilla ice cream, rice dumplings, salted rice crackers, strawberry syrup, and strawberries.

There’s also the Signature 24Hr Wagyu Brisket, comprising A5 Kumamoto black wagyu, dressed with a peppercorn sauce. As for the seafood, pick between Freshly Shucked OystersGrilled Spanish Octopus, and more.

To accompany your mains, choose from sides such as Confit Marble Potatoes and Creamed Spinach & Parmigiano. Finally, round off your meal on a sweet note, with an indulgent Basque-style Burnt Cheesecake, or Molten Chocolate Tart.
