Lok lok in Singapore

Road trips to and around Malaysia are always punctuated by lok lok breaks. I remember far too much time spent outside mobile trucks, putting away skewer after skewer, all made more delicious by how cheap it was.

Get the very same on home ground with our guide to lok lok in Singapore. From hawker stalls to buffets, and even eateries with China-style skewers known as chuan chuan, here are some of the best lok lok stalls we know.

Northern Chinese cuisine’s take on lok lok is known as chuan er, or chuan chuan. These have taken off in Singapore, in part thanks to places like BBQ Box. Having been around since 2016, BBQ Box sells a lengthy host of chuan chuan that spans classics including beef, mutton, and sausages, to Singaporean-style bites such as ngoh hiang. Choose from original, spicy, or mala spicy skewers, with prices starting from $1.20.

They also have four outlets islandwide, in Chinatown, Bugis, Bukit Timah, and Geylang.
