The trend is finally switching lanes. Last year, it was all about matcha buns, and we were on a journey to uncover the best matcha buns available in Singapore. Of course, it is a tie between DONQ and St. Leaven. Taste is always pretty subjective. Moving on, now, we are on an adventure to find all the traditional bakeries around Singapore. There is no better time than the present!

So far, we have found some interesting traditional bakeries including one that makes rainbow loaves, and another one that makes delightful buttercream cakes. Why is it interesting? Most of the time when we think about all things cream and custard, the bun or puff will usually be in a round shape. However, Lau Chong Kee Mini has adopted a hotdog bun-style with an open end. Seeing the jam-packed custard in the middle definitely makes us point to the pastry case and say, “Can I have some of these as well, please?”.

Highlighted by a netizen on Can Eat! Hawker Food, the simple yet fluffy custard bun is priced at $1.40 each. In the same post, the netizen mentioned that the char shao su is also another must-order. Baked to perfection in golden brown, the flaky pastry has minced char siew in between, and it is topped off with some sesame seeds. Get it at $1.50 per pastry. How many custard buns and char shao su will you be ordering?
