Yi Jia Bakery House Cafe has pandan waffles in Thomson
In our search for the best old-school waffles in Singapore, we discovered Yi Jia Bakery House Cafe. This cosy old-school cafe is located along the bustling shophouses of Thomson, the same stretch where affordable onigiri kiosk Mr Onigiri is also found.
10 Best Old-School Waffles Ranked, Filled With Biscoff Spread, Sea Salt Caramel And More
Here you’ll find a spread of freshly baked buns lined up for your perusal, along with traditional kopi and teh, all at affordable prices.
The cafe is fairly small with less than 20 seats, so it’s best to pop in during off-peak hours if you’re trying to snag a table.
The Luncheon Meat Bun ($1.50) is a favourite of many patrons; this classic bun comprises soft and fluffy bread with a slab of luncheon meat in the middle. The bakery and cafe also offers other traditional flavours such as Coconut ($1.50) and Butter Sugar ($1.50).
A lesser-known fact is that Yi Jia also dishes out a delicious pandan waffle, which, in fact, made it to the top of our list of favourite waffles. Unliked most neighbourhood bakeries, these pandan waffles are thicker with a honeycomb-like shape.
We recommend the Kaya Waffle ($2.60), comprising two pandan-spiked waffles sandwiched between a house-made pandan kaya. Other filling options include Peanut ($2.80), Chocolate ($2.80), and Blueberry ($2.80)
Wash everything down with a Teh C or Kopi C, both affordably priced at $1.40 each.
For more neighbourhood bakery content, visit Small Bites, a new waffle kiosk in the Kreta Ayer HDB estate with $1.30 pandan waffles, handmade curry puffs and more. Another must-visit for cheap bread is The Bread Boutiq, a hidden bakery in Bishan that sells $0.60 buns filled with Japanese red bean.
