If you are a regular to Bukit Merah View Food Centre, you should be familiar with Bukit Merah View Carrot Cake, one of the most popular stalls there.

The interesting thing about this stall is it has been around for more than 50 years (previously from Clementi), and two brothers took out rotated shifts – one usually in the morning shift, one at night.

The morning shift uncle – My Ng Hock Chye who is the young brother, had decided to open his own Carrot Cake stall.

Unforgettable Carrot Cake 忘不了萝卜糕 is located at the back of the food centre at #01-30. It has earned rave reviews among customers, with a 5.0 rating on Google.

While it is unclear exactly why he decided to do so, part of the reason is because the two brothers have different styles of frying, and having his own stall would mean more regular hours and no shift work – better for the health.

The friendly uncle and auntie helm the stall, while their sons would help out during peak hours and the weekends. The Carrot Cake comes in $3, $4, or $5, with black and white versions.

While they used to mill their own rice and steam the radish cakes, they are now provided by a supplier.

However, milled rice continues to be used, and uncle proudly mentioned that their cakes would remain supple even till the next day instead of turning slightly harder.

Also, there is an additional step of ‘marinating’ the carrot cake in another pan before transferring it to a big frying pan which supposedly gives the cakes more flavour.

Somehow I have the impression that their Black Carrot Cake is better received by customers, and I loved its slightly charred parts.

While the cakes were generally in bigger cubes, and they remained wobbly-soft with tasty, distinct trace of chye poh (preserved radish) and garlic.

The dark sauce used was of the sweeter side; and while I request for shao la (less chilli), I thought that level of kick was just nice.

While some famous White Carrot Cakes are fried contrastingly crispy in styles (especially on the top layer), theirs was still on the softer side, very eggy, yet with some crisp after dabao.

Good to mention that portion is generous, and not too oily.

I think many fans would agree with me, that this is a wang bu liao, wang bu liao” (unforgettable) dish of Chai Tow Kway.
