It seems like the Michelin inspectors fancy the Jurong area this time round, with 6 new hawker stalls under the Michelin Bib Gourmand and several Michelin Plate stalls all in the West of Singapore.
3 stalls at Taman Jurong Food Centre are newly awarded with a Michelin Plate, which includes Feng Zhen Lor Mee, Yong Kee Claypot Bak Kut The, and Tien Lai Rice Stall 天來飯店.
Located at the back of the food centre, it is not difficult to find a long line of hungry customers waiting for Tien Lai Rice Stall’s plates of tantalising roast meats on rice.
Try to avoid peak hour lunch as they may be busy preparing bulk orders for the workers nearby, and they usually sell out by mid-lunch time (say 12:30pm or so).
Plus, the items are all very affordable, with the Char Siew Rice, Roast Pork Rice and Soy Sauce Chicken Rice priced from $3.00. And in generous portion too.
For more indulgence, you can get plates featuring a combination of meats (from $3.50), Roast Duck Drumstick Rice ($6.50), Soy Sauce Chicken ($11 for half, $22 for whole) and Braised Duck ($19 for half, $38 for whole).
I would think the must-get here is the signature BBQ Char Siew pork, said to be prepared by the hawkers with the secret recipe, known for sweet and fragrant taste.
The Char Siew has a beautiful char and caramelisation – making it quite honeyed-sweet on the outside, with a succulent and part lean part.
Loved the light fragrance and oiliness of the rice too, which tasted better after drizzling some of the sauces over.
I also had the Roasted Pork which was not bad with a crunch on the crackling, but I won’t say it was exceptional.
To me, a huge reason for the popularity Tien Lai Rice Stall is the price-point and portion, but still one of the best roast meats you can find in Jurong.
