Wow, Is this another new café near Outram?
The entire stretch of shophouses along Kampong Bahru has revived with new openings, from Nordic-style cafe At3, cake cafe Dolc Patisserie, Kream & Kensho, Strangers’ Reunion to the pets-friendly Plain Vanilla Bakery.
Opened by Pang Zi Durian located at Jurong West, Three Point Two is their latest brainchild located directly opposite Singapore General Hospital.
The vibrant cafe offers both gelato and durian desserts. Don’t worry, it is not strong-smelling, yet.
If you are intrigued by the name, “Three Point Two” is equal to “16 degree Celsius”, their ideal temperature for storing gelato on the display counter.
Can I say that Three Point Two is ‘on point’ and adventurous in their use of colours?
Unlike most cafes that are styled in minimalist, Scandinavian, Kinfolk or MUJI-like style of like, Three Point Two uses 2 bold colours, blue and bubblegum pink that is indeed eye-catching once you enter the space.
Yet, it didn’t come across as tacky.
All their gelato are made in-house with 18 different flavours (Single $4, Double $7.50, Premium +$1, Mao Shan Wang +$2) displayed on their sleek blue counter.
Surprise, no cones are available here. Instead, diners can choose to have their gelato with Waffle ($5.50), Chocolate Waffle ($6) or Gelato Bun ($4).
Interesting classic flavours (Single $4, Double $7.50) include Honey Lavender, Blue Vanilla, Chrysanthemum, Watermelon Mint and Soursop Mint.
Recommended Premium ones (Single $5, Double $8.50) are Lychee Rose and Pistachio.
Perhaps they can increase the durian gelato selection here as there is only one Mao Shan Wang flavour on display.
I decided to get the Blue Vanilla and Watermelon Mint as they are of the same colour theme as their blue and pink interior.
My favourite between the two was the Watermelon mint with a smooth and non-icy texture, yet refreshing with fresh mint taste and watermelon.
The Blue Vanilla that came with mini marshmallows embedded within, was a tad sweet for my liking. So much so that the vanilla flavour was overwhelmed by the sweetness.
In fact, most of their flavours were on the sweet side, and perhaps they can consider reducing the sugar level.
Known for their experience as durian sellers at Pang Zi Durian, durian lovers will not want to miss out their Mao Shan Wang gelato (Single $6, Double $9.50) that was rich and creamy, thorough also on the sweeter side.
For the durian enthusiasts, you might want to opt to add a durian flesh onto your gelato for the extra indulgence.
As a durian lover, my attention was immediately turned to the assortment of durian desserts available.
Think D24 Durian Puffs (10pcs $10.90. 30pcs $30), D24 Durian Mochi (4pcs $10, 24pcs $55), Durian Mousse ($5.50) and Mao Shan Wang Craquelin Puffs (6pcs $13.80, 18pcs $39).
The D24 Durian Mochi (4pcs $10, 24pcs $55) stole the limelight, with an extremely soft, chewy and stretchy mochi skin with 100% D24 durian flesh embedded within.
Non-durian options were available for their puffs (10pcs $10.90. 30pcs $30) in 2 different flavours: Earl Grey and Pistachio.
Both the Earl Grey and Pistachio puffs had an earthy taste profile – the former being more fragrant, and the latter more nutty.
Their Durian Mousse ($5.50, additional D24 shot +$1) reminded me of the offering at famous Dessert Bowl 一碗甜品 at Serangoon Gardens.
(Similar Durian Mousse desserts can be found at Sweet Hut 甜秘密 at Geylang and Tian Wang 甜旺 at Jalan Besar.)
Probably one of the better ones I tasted of late, the Durian Mousse was smooth, made purely with cream with no sugar added.
The D24 durian puree made from durian flesh added that chewy texture and a richer durian taste.
Specialty coffee are prepared using single origin coffee beans from Brazil for their Espresso ($4.50), Long Black ($5), Latte ($5.50) and Mocha ($6).
Non-coffee options include Matcha ($5.50), Matcha Latte ($6) and Caramel Latte ($6).
Providing both gelato and durian desserts fix till 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, Three Point Two will probably be a possible late-night hang out supper place for night owls.
