Well, Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodle puts that question to rest! Situated at Maxwell Food Centre lies this rare gem that serves a unique and scrumptious bowl of Claypot Bak Chor Mee!
Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodle At Maxwell
The owner Ms Chow Lee Feng, has been operating her stall at Maxwell Food Centre for the last five to six years. Fun fact, she has actually only been selling her Claypot Bak Chor Mee for the last three to four months! Lee Feng had gone through selling many different dishes previously such as Chicken Rice, Fish Soup, and Claypot Rice. As business wasn’t doing that great, she went through many rounds of trial-and-error serving different dishes, hoping business would pick up. It seems she has finally settled on her current Claypot Bak Chor Mee and let’s hope this heavenly dish is here to stay!
Lee Feng settled with this dish as she was inspired by an elderly man selling soupy Bak Chor Mee. The name of the stall even pays tribute to him! The Claypot Bak Chor Mee started to gain immense popularity when a post of the stall went viral on Hawkers United 2020 Facebook group. The stall’s business was initially deeply affected due to the restrictions and sold on average 10 bowls a day. In spite of this, Lee Feng still insisted on making her ingredients from scratch daily instead of making them in bulk and freezing them. Truly a tremendous amount of dedication!
Scrumptious & Affordable Claypot Bak Chor Mee
The Claypot Bak Chor Mee is served at an extremely affordable price at only $2.50! Definitely one of the cheapest Bak Chor Mee’s in Singapore! Lee Feng decided to sell her dish cheap as she wanted to make it affordable to the many elderly folks around the area. She prepares the dishes at 6am daily and you can definitely taste the hard work then went into making it!
The soup is flavourful, and has a strong wok hei taste, due to the claypot. Though hard to believe, the soup is made with no MSG! It is actually prepared with dried sole fish to give its sweetness and depth of flavour. You can sip the soup to your heart’s content without worrying about that MSG-induced thirst!
The noodles are springy and soak up the soup nicely, making every slurp a delight! A generous amount of minced pork is added that elevates the flavour of the dish. The minced pork is well-seasoned and gives the dish an added oomph. Additionally, tons of crispy pork lard is added to give that umami and crunch to the dish. Do eat them fast as they get soggy after a while!
For those who love their pork, the Signature Bak Chor Mee ($4.50) is the way to go! The dish comes with additional pork dumplings, pork balls and pork skin. The silky dumplings have a good amount of filling while the pork balls have a good bite and have a nice porky flavour. Additionally, the collagen-filled pork skin has the perfect chewy texture and soaks up the soup, giving it a burst of flavour as soon as you take a bite!
