When it comes to Bak Kut Teh, are you Team Herbal or Team Peppery? One thing’s for sure, both versions are delicious in their own right! For this article, we will be going on the Team Herbal route to introduce to you Hong Ji Claypot Herbal Bak Kut Teh! Tucked away at Ang Mo Kio lies this popular stall that serves up a scrumptious bowl of Herbal Bak Kut Teh! With over four outlets islandwide, you know they’re definitely doing something right with their food! What’s makes them so popular? Let’s have a look!
Family-Run Bak Kut Teh Business
The owner Mr Lim, opened his first outlet at Marsiling in 1996. He roped in his family to help out with the business. His children have even dedicated their time and effort to help out with the business even while they were still schooling. Truly inspiring to see the effort put in from the entire family!
Mr Lim learned the recipe from a Malaysian hawker and improved on it, which is the current recipe still being used today. Even to this day, he still packs all the herbs into the bags himself and distributes them to all the different outlets. The herbs are boiled for 6 hours, transforming them into an aromatic and light broth.
Comforting And Scrumptious Herbal Bak Kut Teh
The Original Claypot Bak Kut Teh ($5.50) instantly hits you with its fragrant and herbal aroma. The tasty soup comes with lettuce, mushrooms, tau pok, and tender pork ribs. Despite being a herbal soup, the taste isn’t as medicinal as you would expect. This makes it much more palatable for those who aren’t really fans of the herbal version. The broth is boiled with more than 10 herbs, including dang shen and yu zhu which helps give sweetness to the soup. The soup is light and the herbs create the perfect blend of flavours together. Simply comforting and delicious!
The pork ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender and absolutely delightful with every bite! The tau pok absorbs the herbal broth like a sponge, bursting in flavour with every bite! For a little added crunch, you can also order You Tiao ($1.20), a quintessential side dish for Bak Kut Teh!
One unique feature about Hong Ji is its array of carb options. Apart from the usual rice, you can opt for noodles such as Plain Mee Sua Soup and Plain Maggie Mee Soup. Additionally, they also have Plain Ee Mee Soup and Plain Yellow Noodle Soup, all of which are being served at $1.50 each. Definitely a great variety of carb options to choose from!
Hurry Down And Try Them Today!
Hong Ji also offers other scrumptious dishes such as their Claypot Braised Pig’s Trotters ($4.50), and Claypot Braised Pork Intestines ($5.50)! Both dishes are certainly worth trying out as well! With the other three outlets at Toa Payoh, Upper Thompson, and Marsiling, hurry down to the nearest outlet and try it for yourself today!
