Starting out as a home-based business, Madu The Bakery has certainly come a long way! Run by Jocelyn Wijaya, she was previously a baker at patisserie Little House of Dreams before starting her home-based business last year. Her newly opened cafe gives off warm and cosy vibes as soon as you step in, with a 25-seater space and woody interior that’s perfect for small gatherings.

Signature items like the Mentaiko, Classic Garlic, and Umami Mushroom are offered daily, perfect for those looking for savoury bun options. Do note that their sandwiches are not displayed as they are all made to order. Besides their Cereal Prawn Croissant, you can also opt for their Nori Jambon, Madu’s favourite sandwich, or the Apple Brie Parma for a tasty sweet-savoury combo. Of course, there’s always room for desserts! Dig into their Bolu Keju, Yuzu Jasmine, or even their Espresso Pistachio for the perfect ending to your meal!

Signature Mentaiko Bun ($6.50)

This amazing bun will definitely hit the spot for all you mentaiko lovers! The exterior has a savoury parmesan crust, giving it a pleasant crispiness while the inside is soft and fluffy. Filled with a creamy mentai mayo, it gives a delightful contrast of textures with the bun! Interestingly, it has a consistency that gives it a crabmeat-like texture, without any meat at all! Flavourwise, it has just the right amount, ensuring it doesn’t get too rich and jelak. Additionally, the tobiko adds a layer of crunch and the pepper gives a good kick of heat while cutting through the richness of the sauce. It’s seriously a must-try whenever you’re there!

 Cereal Prawn Croissant ($11.90)

Up next is a sandwich inspired by the beloved zhi char dish- the cereal prawn! It is served with tiger prawns, yuzu mayo, toasted cereal, red chilli, cheese, curry leaves and of course, a croissant. Simply step into the cafe and you can immediately smell the fragrance of the toasted cereal! Although the croissant is crispy on the outside, it lacks the fluffiness you would typically expect. However, this could be due to the contrast of textures and for it to help hold the ingredients.

As for the cereal prawns, it has a good bite, with an overflowing mountain of cereal, ensuring each bite is bursting in cereal goodness! For the yuzu mayo, it has a subtle hint of yuzu which sadly gets overpowered by the other flavours unless you have it by itself. On top of that, the cheese adds savouriness while the curry leaves and red chilli gives a good kick of spice to lift the dish! A unique and innovative take on this classic dish that you should definitely give a try!

Bolu Keju ($6)

To end off your meal, why not go for Madu’s Bolu Keju, an Indonesian-style cheesecake! The cheesecake is light and fluffy, with the bourbon vanilla giving a delightful burst of sweetness with a strong vanilla flavour. Cheddar cheese is grated on top, adding savouriness for a beautiful balance of flavours with the vanilla. Additionally, the blend of textures between the cheese, cake and bourbon vanilla makes it simply incredible! The perfect sweet-savoury dessert to end off your meal!
