Golden Mile Food Centre is no doubt one of the most popular hawker centres in Singapore. With a plethora of amazing food there such as Chicken Curry Noodles, Roast Pork, and Braised Duck, you will certainly be spoiled for choice. Adding to the list of scrumptious food is none other than Chung Cheng Chilli Mee, a stall that has achieved the Michelin Plate! This stall is definitely a must-try and is one of the best dishes to have while at Golden Mile!
Michelin Plate Chilli Mee At Golden Mile
A fun fact, the founder, Mr Yeo, used to sell his noodles from a pushcart outside Chongzheng Primary School in Tampines. He came to Singapore from Sarawak to escape the war. The stall then moved to Golden Mile Food Centre in the 1970s and is now run by the second and third generation Yeos.
Chung Cheng has currently achieved “Michelin Plate” status in the Singapore Michelin Guide 2019. This is in recognition for eateries that have yet to earn their Bid Gourmand or Michelin Star. Don’t worry, this doesn’t disparage the fact that Chung Cheng still serves one tasty bowl of Chilli Mee. This is a dish that’s definitely still worth trying!
Chung Cheng’s signature Chilli Mee is served in three options: $3, $4, and $5. The $3 bowl comes with prawns, tau pok, fish cakes, and slices of hard boiled egg. The $4 version is a step up with pork ribs while the $5 bowl has extra prawns and pork ribs. For the noodles, there is an array of selections you can choose from. Options include yellow noodles, mee pok, mee kia, kway teow, thin and thick bee hoon.
Signature Chilli Sauce
After your noodles are cooked, a generous amount of chilli sauce is scooped and your noodles are simply drowned in it. The signature chilli sauce is made with dried shrimps, belacan, garlic, and onions. Additionally, secret spices are added, making the chilli sauce one of a kind.
For those who can’t really handle their spice, don’t worry, the chilli is more of a mixture between satay bee hoon gravy and belacan sauce. With it being more on the savoury side, the chilli doesn’t overpower the taste of the ingredients. This makes every bite flavourful, yet with a kick of spice. Simply delicious!
The pork ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and every bite has an explosion of flavour. The pork is marinated with 13 special spices and slow-cooked for several hours. Now you know why its so good! For the soup, you might be thinking it’ll probably taste like the one you get with prawn mee. Instead, it has a rich herbal sweetness with hints of pepper.
Try Chung Cheng Chilli Mee Now!
Besides chilli mee, Chung Cheng also serves prawn noodles and laksa. Additionally, you can purchase their signature chilli sauce for $3 per pack. Having received the Michelin Plate is certainly no easy feat, making Chung Cheng Chilli Mee a must try! Hurry down and try it now!
