Heng Carrot Cake has been around since 1971 and continues to serve up scrumptious fried carrot cake to their loyal base of customers. They are actually one of the only few stalls in Singapore steaming their own carrot cake, as compared to most that get them ready-made from factories. This certainly sets them apart from the rest, which explains why they’re still so popular even to this day! Having been awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand, it is definitely a testament to their hard work and the quality of their dishes!
Another unique feature of Heng is that you can order both your white and black carrot cake together! Enjoy the best of both worlds at only $6! For those who are more of a purist, you can order the black and white version individually at $4 each. The white version comes with cubes of white radish perfectly stir-fried with eggs, prawns, and chai por. Every bite brings you a beautiful mix of crispiness and softness, with a kick of wok hei to elevate the dish! Be sure to have it with the chilli for extra flavour and spice for that extra oomph!
For the black version, it leans more on the sweet side as compared to the white version. With the added dark soy sauce, every bite has a pleasant mix of sweetness and savouriness! Additionally, the spice from the chilli helps to balance out the sweetness as well as helping to add another dimension of flavour! Although Heng Carrot cake isn’t the best in Singapore, it’s certainly a worthy dish to try when you’re at Newton Food Centre!
