Popular Zhi Char Stall At Chinatown

Tang Kay Kee has been serving up delectable zhi char dishes along Upper Hokkien Street since 1946 before setting up their current stall at Hong Lim Food Centre in 1978. The stall is currently run by fourth-generation hawkers, Debbie and her grand aunt. Fun fact, they used to only operate in the evening before they started serving their zhi char rice bowls to the lunch crowds in Jan 2018! Tang Kay Kee’s Har Cheong Gai uses the same recipe as their normal zhi char dish, which is marinated overnight for at least 12 hours. The result is the most delectable prawn paste chicken that customers can’t get enough of!
Scrumptious Har Cheong Gai Rice Bowl

The Har Cheong Gai Rice Bowl ($6) comes with boneless and bite-sized pieces of crispy fried chicken, perfect for those who don’t want to get their hands dirty! The delectable chicken sits on a bed of fluffy rice, with shredded cucumber and an onsen egg to complete this amazing dish. The chicken is beautifully fried, with a nice crispy exterior while still being tender and juicy inside! The prawn paste flavour is definitely a lot more pronounced as compared to your typical har cheong gai from other zhi char stalls!

Drizzled over the chicken is a homemade tangy chilli sauce, similar to the classic sweet Thai chilli sauce most of us are familiar with. The sauce adds a pleasant touch of tanginess to the dish, helping to balance out the richness of the fried chicken. Additionally, the shredded cucumber helps to cut through the oiliness, making the dish less jelat! Be sure to dip your chicken into the onsen egg for that extra layer of creaminess for a super shiok bite!
