Local House in Johor Bahru
If you’ve been following our content lately, you may have noticed that we’ve been covering a lot of fancy cafes in JB, such as Sunday Morning Coffee Shop and Rowan & Parsley. Local House, a cafe at Mount Austin that serves unpretentious Malaysian food, offers a nice alternative to the usual cafe fare.
The place is best described as a casual Malaysian cafe with fuss-free service, comfortable air-conditioned interiors, and plenty of local grub to choose from. And while it’s not as Instagrammable as some of the other JB places we’ve covered, the ambience still feels pretty classy.
For a homely breakfast, you can order some Toasted Hainan Bread with Butter + Kaya (RM2.90+/~S$1+), with some Half Boiled Eggs (RM2.90+/~S$1+) to go along. The toast, grilled on charcoal, comes with a slab of butter and a generous smear of kaya. Don’t forget to dunk them into the eggs for maximum enjoyment.
The extra gao Iced Kopi (RM3.40+/~S$1.10+) is the perfect companion to your breakfast. It comes in quite a big cup, too, so you’re definitely getting your money’s worth.
If you’re looking for a heartier meal, the KL Hokkien Mee (RM10.90+/~S$3.50+) is a great lunch option. This hearty dish comes with a generous amount of ingredients, including chicken strips, fish cake, and thick yellow Hokkien noodles, coated in a rich and flavourful dark soy-based sauce.
Top off your meal with the Chicken Satay with Ketupat & Peanut Sauce (RM5.90+/~S$1.90+). These tender chicken skewers were well-marinated and slightly sweet, and paired well with the soft ketupat rice cakes. Dip them into the peanut sauce for a pleasant nutty flavour!
