Run by a husband-and-wife duo, Hong Kee has been around for almost 50 years, providing the residents of Commonwealth with comforting and delicious porridges. Serving up three varieties of porridge – Pork, Fish and Fish Head, each serving is cooked individually upon order. Although they usually close at 2.30pm, it is best to head down early as popular dishes like their Fish Porridge can be sold out pretty early.

The Fish Porridge ($4) is served with a generous amount of sliced fish and a dash of pepper and spring onions. Compared to your usual Cantonese-style congee, Hong Kee’s consistency is slightly more watery. It does however still clump together like your usual congee and has that pleasant smooth texture. The flavour of the fish is infused beautifully into the porridge, with an old-school and nostalgic taste in each bite. Truly a comforting dish! Additionally, it tastes really healthy yet it still has a good amount of flavour. For those who do prefer it a little more flavourful, simply drizzle some soya sauce and you’re good to go.

The fish slices are incredibly fresh and have a good bite to them, without any trace of fishiness. For a little more oomph, simply dip them into some soya sauce with chilli padi. To elevate your dish even further, simply top-up an additional dollar for a century egg. Although Hong Kee might not be the best in Singapore, it’s no surprise to see why their traditional and comforting porridges have remained popular all these years. Hurry down and try it for yourself today!
