Sunday Morning Coffee Shop is a hidden second-storey gem that’s located along Jalan Trus in Johor Bahru, within the vicinity of the famous Hiap Joo Bakery. This Johor Bahru cafe is a quick 10-minute ride from the customs, which makes it a great spot for a pick-me-up if you’ve just crossed the border, or if you’re heading back to SG.
You need to walk up a steep flight of stairs to enter the Japanese-inspired cafe, tucked in a nondescript shophouse. The space is uber cute and cosy, with rounded wooden seats and tables that add a touch of warmth.
Sunday Morning Coffee Shop, as its name suggests, is known for its coffee—specifically, drip coffee. However, you can also get light bites and pastries if you’re feeling peckish.
Though the food menu isn’t super extensive, you’ll still find a few select mains including Japanese Curry Rice (RM13/~S$4.20) and Udon Noodle Soup (RM15/~S$4.90) if you’re hankering for comfort food.
We recommend the Hot Sando with Curry Set (RM18/~S$5.80): a beautifully-toasted sandwich stuffed with ham, cheese, and egg, served alongside a house-made curry sauce.
The Brownie (RM12/~S$3.90) is also a signature here; this fudgy dessert is warmed up upon order, and topped with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Wash it all down with a refreshing Cold Drip Coffee (RM9/~S$3.90), or get the Hand Drip Milk Coffee (RM8/S$2.60) if you want something creamier. Alternatively, the Grapefruit Soda (RM9/~S$3.90) makes for a welcome respite from the heat outside.
Another unique cafe in JB worth checking out is Keijometo, a TikTok-famous concrete cafe with an extensive matcha menu and Japanese-inspired mains. Dessert fans will also love Ukiyo, a pink cafe in Mount Austin JB serving beautiful layered cakes.
