Fans of Just Because Creamery in Sembawang will be thrilled to know that the brand has opened a second out in Serangoon right beside NEX

With a rebranding to The Better Scoop, their new outlet at Serangoon is more spacious and can accommodate 32 pax.

With a clean, minimalist Scandinavian-style for its interior, decked in natural elements of wood, greeneries and natural sunlight with a homely feel.

Their iconic plant wall is also available at this outlet, perfect as a backdrop for the Instagram-shot.

Compared to first outlet in Sembawang, diners can look forward to a more extensive menu with more (18 versus 14) ice cream flavours (Single $4.20, Double $8, Premium +$0.50), unique Waffles ($6.50 – $6.80), Signature drinks ($5 – $6.50), Coffee ($3.50 – $5) and Tea ($4.50).

With the close proximity to Silver Circle by NTUC Health, The Better Scoop wishes to cater to the senior citizens by offering traditional nostalgic ice cream flavours such as Orh Nee (Yam), Black Sesame Soy Milk, Luo Han Guo (Monk fruit) Longan, Tie Guan Yin, Chrysanthemum Goji Berries and Osmanthus Oolong.

Among the 3 seasonal waffles, the Tie Guan Yin Waffle ($6.50) and Nian Gao Waffle ($6.80) come with a traditional twist.

Their Chrysanthemum Goji Berries ice cream is worth a mention, with brightened refreshing floral notes from the chrysanthemum and sweetness from the Goji berries that is beneficial to health, yet doesn’t taste like a traditional Chinese medicine concoction.

Honey chamomile & Butterfly pea flower ice cream will probably attract the younger crowd, with an attractive two-tone hues of yellow and blue.

While Butterfly pea flower does not have any flavours on its own, the whole camomile flower used in the gelato added a floral scent and taste, akin to the actual chamomile tea.

I enjoyed the Nian Gao Waffles ($6.80) with a layer of Nian Gao, a traditional “Chinese New Year cake”, made from glutinous rice flour embedded within the waffle.

Adding a chewy texture in contrast to the crispy nature of a waffle, it is similar to how we usually pan-fried our Nian Gao with eggs, except in the form of a waffle that is more airy.

The Nian Gao also added some sweetness and richness to the overall taste, which will probably be a popular item among the younger crowd.

Their signature drinks menu also include interesting traditional options such as Mung Bean Ice Latte ($5.50), Red Date Longan Latte with Peach Gum ($6) and Pei Pa Koa Latte with Peach Gum ($6.50).

Instead of using tapioca pearls, the peach gum added a similar chewy texture with a healthier choice.

The Pei Pa Koa Latte with Peach Gum ($6.50) has a distinctive minty sensation and is a familiar taste that we grew up with.

The Mung Bean Ice Latte ($5.50) comes with a single scoop of mung bean ice cream blended with ice and milk to create a milkshake.

Instead of serving hot traditionally in the form of a bowl of mung bean soup, the Mung Bean Ice Latte retained the taste, but served chilled with a creamier texture.

With interesting flavours that differentiate themselves from other ice cream shops, I believed the Better Scoop with be a popular spot for ice cream lovers.
