It seems like the Jalan Besar area is regaining its ‘glory’ with quite a handful of new F&Bs opening lately.
From Once Upon A Time opened by actress Jeanette Aw, +886 Taiwanese Bistro, Lola Faye Cafe, Asylum Coffehouse, For The People, Sweets Craftsman, to Café Monochrome.
That is really quite a handful of them.
Sweet Cheeks Gelato first started in 2019 at Potong Pasir by 3 SMU graduates together with an Italy-trained chef handcrafting fresh gelato daily.
They had subsequently expanded their business to their second outlet at Ang Mo Kio, near softserve specialty cafe AMPM Café and old school confectionary Pine Garden.
Their 3rd outlet located directly opposite Chye Seng Huat Hardware and few doors away from Creamery Boutique Ice Creams, is their largest branch to date.
24 tables are neatly arranged in rows of 2s, decked in wooden furniture and flooring against a white and minimalist interior.
There is also an #OOTD corner at their pink booth seat located at the entrance to the cafe, whereas the ice cream counter is equipped with hanging bespoke lightings that look like giant marshmallows.
18 gelato flavours are available at any one time, priced at $4 for single scoop, $7.50 for double scoops, additional $1 for premium flavour and additional $2 for gourmet flavours.
For more indulgence, there are add-ons such as Waffle ($6), Chocolate Lava Cake ($5), Brownie ($5).
Normal flavours (Single $4, Double $7.50) include Marshmallow Oreo, Earl Grey, Cereal Milk, Hojicha, Honeycomb, Biscoff Cookie Brunch, Hazelnut with Nutella Swirl and Peanut Butter Banana.
The Premium flavours (Single $5) are more unique and interesting: Ricotta with Pistachio bits, Cinnamon Brown Bread, Lemon curd with Speculoos bits, Honey Chrysanthemum with Cacao nibs, Lychee with Raspberry bits and vegan Fleur de Cao dark Chocolate.
The gourmet flavour ($6) Sicilian Pistachio with Pistachio bits was my favourite.
It had this smooth and creamy texture with crushed pistachio that added a contrast, while the flavours were distinctive yet not overwhelming.
Two new flavours were launched in conjunction with the opening of this outlet: Balsamic Strawberry with Chia Seeds and Biscoff Cookie Crunch.
The Balsamic Strawberry with Chia Seeds was a refreshing treat, citrusy and tangy with a refreshing twist.
The waffle here was well executed and fragrant, being light and airy on the inside and with a nice, golden-brown crispy edge on the surface.
Sprinkled with icing sugar and drizzled with “golden syrup” that is similar to maple syrup on the sides, it ended up a tad too sweet for my liking.
A BBX blend of Brazil and Sumatra, roasted by Smitten Specialty Coffee & Tea is used for their espresso-based drinks: Espresso ($4), Americano ($4.50), White ($5), Mocha ($6), Affogato ($7).
I decided to go with their new flavour: Biscoff Cookie Crunch for my Affogato ($7) which surprisingly tasted like a cup of caramel latte due to the caramelised taste of the Biscoff lotus biscuits.
Opened till 1am on Fridays and Saturdays, Sweet Cheeks Gelato will be a sweet supper spot to satisfy late night cravings.
