Soh Kee Cooked Food 蘓记熟食 at Jurong West 505 Market & Food Centre (Hong Kah Point) does not serve up the typical hawker food, but Chicken & Porridge Sets.

Yes, you can’t find the usual chicken rice here.

This under-the-radar hawker stall was recently included in the Michelin Bib Gourmand Singapore 2021.

And if you are curious, some of the other new Bib Gourmand stalls at Jurong include Jian Bo Shui Kueh (Jurong West 505), Lai Heng Handmade Teochew Kueh (Yuhua Hawker Centre), Heng Heng Cooked Food (Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre), Fei Fei Roasted Noodle 肥肥烧腊云吞面 (Yuhua Village Market & Food Centre), and Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh (Jurong East).

There wasn’t a mega long queue at Soh Kee when I visited, with a steady flow of customers which cleared fast. However, the food centre was rather cramped and finding seats during peak hours could prove to be a slight challenge.

The one thing that left an impression was the pricing – the basic Chicken Porridge starts from $2, and even a set with steamed chicken is at $3.50. Very affordable.

Other porridge choices on the menu include Fish Porridge ($3), Cuttlefish Porridge ($3), Mixed Porridge ($3) with an extra costing $0.50 extra.

The set for a pax is priced at $3.50, and top-ups are available to change to Chicken Thigh ($4.50 or Drumstick ($5).

The porridge appeared to be in between the thicker Cantonese style and watery Teochew version, but would say closer to Cantonese.

The texture was smooth, not overly gooey such that you would taste grains. As for seasoning, it was simple with soy sauce, sesame oil and a dash of pepper.

There was a sense of belly-warming comfort upon having it. This was flavourful on its own but not overly rich.

If choy I would be feeling under-the-weather, this is the kind of porridge I would love to have – moderately thin consistency, pleasant flavours and easy-on-the-belly.

As for the steamed chicken, they were fresh, succulent and tender, drizzled in a soy-based sauce that was on the sweet side.

It was similar to, but yet not completely alike to the poached chicken you would get in a typical Hainanese chicken rice style. Would say these were chopped into smaller pieces, slippery-smooth on the skin, and soft on the meat texture.

Simple, down-to-earth food, especially comforting during the rainy weathers.
