Goodbye Nunsongyee 눈송이, and hello to Smile Dessert 酒窝甜品.
If you frequent heading to the Bugis area, you would be familiar with this 3-storey space along North Bridge Road right opposite Bugis Junction, at one end of the bustling Tan Quee Lan street.
Previously popular Korean bingsu café Nunsongyee has said its ”Goodbye” and in comes dessert store Smile Dessert.
Smile Dessert is planing to be opened for 24 hours daily, but that would only be something later after its soft launch. (Currently tentative hours are 11am to 3am, while stocks last.)
It is supposedly a China-based international dessert chain with more than 1500 outlets in various countries around the world.
The chain is known for its creative takes on traditional Chinese desserts along with its aesthetic ‘instagrammable’ over-the-top offerings.
True enough, the exterior is already painted in a striking bubble-gum pink.
If you absolutely attest the colour, pink doesn’t leave the interior with every level – decorated in various shades of pink.
A Pink Panther toy lies on a bed of balls, a baby pink trolley somewhere, a flamingo-pink Christmas tree is on the third storey facing light-pink sofa. Oh gosh, even the toilet bowl is in magenta-pink.
Pink, pink, pink everywhere, you get the drift.
The menu is divided into Souffle, Lava Cake, Korean Bingsu, Traditional Desserts, Cakes and Pastries, Smoothies, Fruit Tea to Milk Tea.
When I visited, several categories of the menu were not available yet – only limited sliced cakes, desserts and drinks.
Also be patient as they are still settling operational processes, and food and drinks did take a long while to arrive. While the cashier informed “20 to 30 minutes”, it was in reality closer to 45 minutes to an hour, for even say one drink.
On the traditional dessert menu, there was Mango Sago with Pomelo ($5.90), Snow White with Black Pearl ($6.90), Mango Love ($8.90), Twin Snow Mountain ($6.90) and Coconut Milk Fruit Jelly ($6.90). The presentation looked similar to other dessert stores such as Honeymoon Dessert and Hui Lau Shan.
The Mango Ice with Rice Ball ($6.90) was considered decent with fresh mango cubes and chewy glutinous balls adding some textural differences, though it was overall on the richly-sweet side especially after the mango ice cream melted in.
Sliced cakes available included Multi Layer Durian Cake ($12.9) – I think they meant Mille Crêpe, Boba Pearl Mousse Cake ($7.90), Mango Pomelo Sago Mousse Cake ($8.90) and Tiramisu Mousse Cake ($7.90).
The Purple Sweet Potato Cake ($8.90) was presented Mille Crêpe style but unfortunately this was no Lady M as it wasn’t sufficiently thawed before serving, with icy bits between the layers.
The mini-jugs of Fruit Tea turned out to be my favourite thing there, with flavours of Mixed Fruit Tea ($6.90), Dragon Fruit Tea ($7.90), Orange Fruit Tea ($6.90), Strawberry Lemon Tea ($7.90), and Yogurt & Passion Fruit Tea ($7.90).
An attractive-looking and refreshing thirst-quencher after the BBQ or hotpot meals nearby, the Peach Lemon Tea ($6.90) was thankfully not-too-sweet, though the peach taste was not that apparent.
With a central location at Bugis, spread of sweet treats and drinks, and instagram-worthy interior, Smile Dessert looks set to pack in the crowd very quickly during the opening days. Hopefully the get their operations ironed out very, very soon.
