Smile Dessert 酒窝甜品, the triple-storey pink building opposite Bugis Junction, has opened a second outlet near Dhoby Ghaut.
Located at GR.ID along Selegie Road, the building previously known as POMO has a striking orange-red Tetris-design.
The youth-centric building is currently still undergoing renovation with only the first and basement floor opened to public. You can expect some F&B brands such as Taiwanese eatery Isshin Machi, Kamikaze Asian Tapas Bar, Chops! Grill & Sides, Thai Street, and Xiao Mu Deng Hotpot.
Supposedly a China-based international dessert chain with more than 1500 outlets in various countries around the world, Smile Dessert 酒窝甜品 is known for its creative takes on traditional Chinese desserts along with its aesthetic ‘instagrammable’ look.
And if you have been to their Bugis outlet, you will observe several resemblance. However, the Selegie outlet is decked in blue and white instead of the pink bubble-gum theme.
Yes, everything is decorated in blue and white, from the ball pool to the trolley, cushions, chairs, takeaway cups, and a Cookie Monster lookalike as their ‘mascot’.
Their menu selection is rather similar at both outlets, with a few new additions such as Purple Sweet Potato Smoothie ($7.90), Watermelon Smoothie ($7.90), Durian Smoothie ($12.90) and Hundred Treasure Ai Yu Combo ($6.90).
The menu is very comprehensive, divided into Soufflé ($15.90), Lava Cake ($9.90), Korean Bingsu ($16.90 – $18.90), Traditional Desserts ($6.90), Cakes ($7.90 – $12.90), Waffles ($6.90 – $9.90), Smoothies ($7.90), Fruit Tea ($7.90) and Milk Tea ($6.90).
Also be patient as they are still settling operational processes, and food and drinks did take a while to arrive even though I was the only customer in the shop then.
Perhaps keep yourself entertained while waiting by heading to the various pretty corners for your #OOTD shot.
The most aesthetic dessert would appear to be the Lava Cake ($9.90). For those that we are familiar with this style, the dessert comes in the form of Fountain Cake, in which a ‘torrent’ of cream will overflow when the plastic sheet is removed.
This comes in 4 different flavours, Mango Pomelo Sago, Matcha, Fragrant Chocolate and Brown Sugar With Pearl, in which whipping cream is added in between the layers of sponge cake with fillings embedded within and on the top layer.
Get you phones (video mode) ready as the plastic is removed, watching the thick layer of cream flowing down the layered cake.
I had the Matcha Lava Cake ($9.90) that consisted of 3 matcha sponge cake, with mango cubes and tapioca pearls in between the layer.
Matcha powder was sprinkled on the top layer of the matcha cream, which further intensified the earthly flavours that matcha-holics should approve.
The matcha sponge cakes were moist and fluffy, with a contrast to the chewy tapioca pearls and mango cubes.
Both the Smoothies ($7.90) and Fruit Tea ($7.90) come in beer jugs meant for sharing, or for the individual feeling really thirsty.
The smoothies are available in flavours such as Yogurt Grape, Yogurt Mango, Yogurt Strawberry, Melon Yogurt, Dragonfruit and Mango Yogurt, Strawberry & Mango Yogurt, Purple Sweet Potato and Watermelon.
Topped with whipping cream and chunks of dragonfruit, the Purple Sweet Potato Smoothie ($7.90) was blended to a smooth and velvety texture, unsweetened and appeared to be pretty filling.
With its close vicinity to SMU, SOTA, Kaplan, Lasalle, and NAFA, Instagram-worthy corners and a wide selection of desserts, Smile Desserts will probably be the next popular spot to check out.
