Restoran Hua Mui JB
There’s no school like the old school, and Restoran Hua Mui JB has found that sweet spot that’s kept them in business since 1946. Not to be confused with IT Roo Cafe, which is the other famous chicken chop go-to near Customs, we were tipped off by more than one Grab driver that Hua Mui is now the better between the two.
You can’t walk past Hua Mui and miss it—the corner unit is decked in peeling, faded coral-red paintwork, and a huge white signboard. If you’re sitting at one of the tables on the ground floor, you’ll see a manual pulley system in the kitchen that stands in place of a dumbwaiter.
The first thing, and only dish if you must, to order is Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM17.90/~S$5.80). Restoran Hui Mui lays claim to serving The Original Hainanese Chicken Chop, and it’s really worth checking out.

Each order comes with a crisp, well-marinated chicken chop, battered the traditional way with crushed biscuits, grilled tomato, slaw, and potato wedges. It’s also served with a bowl of brown mushroom sauce that you ought to dip the wedges and chicken in.
If you’re not looking for the classic, there’s also a Salted Egg (RM23.90/~S$) and Mutton (RM36.90/~S$) version!
Do note that although Hua Mui’s opening hours are till 5:30pm, they stop welcoming guests from just before 5pm. Their expansive menu will have you covered, however, whether you’re looking for Butter Kaya Toast (RM2.80/~S$0.90) or Bun (RM3/~S$1), Nasi Lemak (RM6.90/~S$2.30), Mee Siam (RM6.90/~S$2.30), or Cantonese Kuey Teow (from RM10.80/~S$3.50).
On the Hainanese specialities front, you can get favourites such as Hainanese Chicken Rice (RM11.90/~S$3.90) and Hua Mui Hainanese Sup Kambing with Rice (RM25.90/~S$8.30), before you finish your meal with Teh or Kopi Cincau (RM4.50/~S$1.50)
