If there is one mooncake you need to get every year for the Mid-Autumn celebrations, many will go for the ‘ever-green’ favourite of Raffles Hotel Singapore’s Champagne Truffle Snow-Skin Mooncake.
Making a debut this season are the Da Li Rose and Strawberry Chocolate Snow-Skin Mooncake, as well as the Yunnan Dark Brown Sugar and Rum Truffle Snow-Skin Mooncake.
To be honest, both are worthy contenders for the best, maintaining the “Raffles Hotel Quality”.
The mooncakes are available for purchase from 30 July to 21 September 2021, from https://www.rafflescelebrations.com.sg as well as the mooncake booth at Raffles Arcade.
However, from my experience last year, do order your boxes early as the popular flavours are typically sold out before the actual Mooncake Festival itself (falls on 21 September 2021).
The boxes are updated as well. This year, they are gorgeously presented in a shimmering cream-gold box decorated with pastel pink floral chinoiserie elements. Classy and elegant, and great for gifting.
Here’s more on the handcrafted creations from Raffles Hotel Singapore:
Da Li Rose and Strawberry Chocolate Snow-Skin Mooncake ($78 nett for 8 pcs)
A non-alcoholic choice, this mooncake is inspired by the signature dessert Da Li Rose Petal Ice Cream from 藝 yì by Jereme Leung’s. Pretty-in-pink, and pretty uplifting in taste as well.
When I took that first bite, I was delightfully surprised that it was as good as how it sounds – the sweet floral may just steal your breath away.
The roses used are specifically from Dali region in Yunnan province, known for these beautiful blooms due to its mild climate and abundant rainfall.
The Da Li Rose is interlaced with Strawberry Chocolate, which provides those tart, aromatic-sweet and chocolatey layers in a single bite.
Yunnan Dark Brown Sugar and Rum Truffle Snow-Skin Mooncake ($78 nett for 8 pcs)
The unique aspect of this mooncake is the caramelisation of Yunnan Dark Brown Sugar, which results in that sweet nutty flavour with slight crispy crunch.
The truffle within is also imbued with a blend of rum and candied winter melon, which gives that part-refreshing, part sweet-toasted taste.
Great to go with the Raffles Singapore Oolong Tea with pleasant toasty undertones.
Champagne Truffle Snow-Skin Mooncake ($79 nett for 8 pcs)
First created in the 1990s, the hand-crafted Champagne Truffle Snow-Skin Mooncake features delicate truffles made with white chocolate shells filled with champagne-infused cream.
Each truffle is sheathed with an exceptional white lotus seed paste, then encapsulated in an ivory-toned glutinous rice skin.
Since it first launched, this East-meets-West mooncake has symbolized luxury and elegance.
A signature mooncake that deserves a chink of your champagne flutes. If you have not tried it before, you may not know what you are missing out.
While this still remains my favourite of the Raffles Hotel range, I have friends who are also giving their vote to the Da Li Rose and Strawberry Chocolate Snow-Skin Mooncake.
Earl Grey Tea and Pearl Snow-Skin Mooncakes ($78 nett for 8 pcs)
Filled with Earl Grey tea-infused milk chocolate ganache and dainty puff cereal pearls coated with dreamy dark chocolate.
Indulgently filled with milk chocolate ganache infused with premium Earl Grey tea, this snow-skin mooncake is also studded with puff cereal pearls.
These dark chocolate-coated pearls add a mild crunch to contrast the velvety smooth white lotus seed paste.
Yuzu and Osmanthus Truffle Snow-Skin Mooncake ($78 nett for 8 pcs)
Features a divine blend of osmanthus tea leaves heightening the natural sweetness of the aromatic yuzu.
The aromatic yuzu takes center stage in this happy pastel yellow-coloured snow-skin mooncake, showcasing its tart and floral flavours.
As perhaps the most exquisite member of the citrus family, yuzu is complemented with a blend of Osmanthus tea leaves.
I would have personally liked the floral flavour to be more pronounced, but this would be great for those who enjoy the distinct citrusy flavour of yuzu.
Their natural sweetness has a slight honey flavour to it, with floral and slightly fruity notes.
Treasured Baked Mooncakes
Three classic mooncakes to celebrate this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival.
Get the satisfying Mother-of-Pearl with Single Yolk and White Lotus Paste Mooncake ($78 nett for 4 pcs), or go double with the all-time favourite Double Yolk with Macadamia Nuts and White Lotus Paste Mooncake ($79 nett for 4 pcs).
What I liked was that the white lotus paste was velvety-smooth and light, without being overly sweet; and those golden-yellow yolks added that delightful salty contrast.
If you enjoy the soft crunch of nuts, you will love the Pine Nuts, Macadamia Nuts and White Lotus Paste Mooncake ($78 nett for 4 pcs).
Purists will love these classic baked mooncakes, impeccably paired a cup of fragrant Chinese tea.
