If you’ve been heading to Olsen Bakehouse at Crawford Lane, here’s a friendly PSA: they’ve relocated to Joo Chiat! The popular bakery, known for their locally-inspired treats, is now sequestered in a conservation shophouse along the same stretch as Tigerlily Patisserie, Petit Pain, Dickson Nasi Lemak, and Da Dong Prawn Noodles.

Fronted by a clean, white storefront, the bakery’s new digs are done up in an earthy-toned, minimalist style.

The eight-year-old family-run bakery prides themselves on their siew dai AKA less sweet cakes, made with all-natural, locally-sourced ingredients as far as possible. They’re not halal-certified, but their ingredients are sourced from halal-certified suppliers. Being a family-friendly bakery as well, no alcohol is used in any of their bakes.

For those unfamiliar with Olsen Bakehouse, their most popular cakes include Ondeh Ondeh, Orh Nee, Pulut Hitam, Milo, and even a Kopi, Kaya & Peanut Butter cake! Most of their whole cakes start from $56 for a 5.5-inch cake that is good for five to six.

The Ondeh Ondeh cake reimagines the popular kueh as a light-as-air cake, featuring hand-extracted pandan juice and low-sugar gula melaka. To finish, it’s sprinkled with fresh coconut flakes.

Go for the Orh Nee, and you’ll find the same pandan chiffon here, layered with house-made orh nee paste, and blanketed in a purple-swirled coconut buttercream.

Perhaps the most unique cake on their menu, Kopi, Kaya & Peanut Butter is an expression of the founders’ favourite local breakfast. Here, their chiffon is flavoured with coffee, and sandwiches a house-made peanut butter and kaya middle. Crushed peanuts complete the cake.

Parents looking for baby-friendly bakes can get some at Olsen Bakehouse too—the Baby-Friendly Banana Cake ($46) is a whole food-only cake made without salt or sugar. Instead of buttercream, it’s got a frosting of Greek yoghurt, topped with fresh berries!
