Nuage? Is this a Chinese word for Nua-哥?Not really.
Nuage, pronounced as Nu-age, means “cloud” in French and is a representation of the owners ideology in being carefree without restrictions in their bakes and pastries.
It joins the stretch of recent openings within the shophouses at Kampong Bahru, near Outram MRT Station.
Cafe hoppers will many options such as gelato shop Three Point Two, HaengBok CakeYo, Nordic-style cafe At3, cake cafe Dolc Patisserie, Kream & Kensho, Strangers’ Reunion to Plain Vanilla Bakery in the same area.
Nuage Patisserie & Boulangerie is opened by three friends, two of them were home-bakers whereas the other has experiences as a Head Pastry Chef at a local Five-stars hotel.
With a few mainstays and other rotating items on their menu, their interior is simply decked in wooden elements that can accommodate 6 tables for dine-in.
The classic French pastries can be found here, namely Croissant ($4), Pain Au Chocolate ($4.50), Ham & Cheese Croissant ($6.90), Kouign Amann ($5.50), Plain Bagel ($3.50) and Bacon Onion Cheese Focaccia ($8.90).
Their cakes menu is on a rotating basis and there were Pistachio Strawberry ($9.20), Strawberry Popcorn ($9.80), Brown Sugar Boba ($9.60), Blueberry Cheesecake ($8.50) and Elmo/ Cookie Monster Cupcake ($6.50).
My favourite was the Brown Sugar Boba ($9.60) with a brown sugar Swiss roll sandwiched between 2 butter cookies.
Remove the butter cookies to reveal the soft and fluffy brown sugar sponge, generously piped with brown sugar Chantilly and brown sugar boba that gives it a nice contrast in textures.
The brown sugar boba came as a surprise with its extremely soft and chewy warabi-mochi like textures, yet it was not overly sweet with a caramelised-fragrance of the brown sugar.
Probably one of the most colourful dessert on display, the Pistachio Strawberry ($9.20) came with crushed pistachio studded tart shell, filled with strawberry confit and pistachio whopped ganache in the middle and pistachio almond cream on top.
Fresh strawberry slices were added as a nice finishing touch, with citrusy notes cutting through the cream filled tart shell.
The combination was earthy and nutty, robust in flavours but yet not too overwhelming on the palate.
Another instagrammable dessert on display was their Strawberry Popcorn ($9.80) that came with a separate pack of popcorn to maintain its crispiness.
Created just like the popcorn emoji in our phones, strawberry sponge and strawberry cream was used as the base with crunchy popcorns as toppings.
As their focus is mainly on bakes and pastries, coffee enthusiasts will be disappointed as they don’t serve artisanal coffee here.
Instead, Nespresso capsules are used for their coffee: Espresso ($3), Long Black ($3.20), Latte ($3.90) and Mocha ($4.50).
Diners can choose to try their signature Iced Matcha ($6), Iced Yuzu Matcha Latte ($6.50), Iced French Chocolate ($6) and Cold Brew Tea ($6) instead.
