Nom Gelato may seem just like another gelato shops sprouting in every corner of Singapore lately.
Located a few doors away from Acai & Smoothie Bowl shop Summer Lab at 33 Erskine Road, Nom Gelato is a short walk away from Maxwell Food Centre and the upcoming Maxwell MRT station along the Thomson-East Coast Line.
With only takeaway and no dine-in space available, the interior is designed in bright and loud colours, with doodles drawn on the walls, takeaways cups and takeaway pints.
The illustrations on the walls are all monotone in contrast to the colourful gelato scoops so that the colours will pop.
Both the takeaway cups and takeaway pints feature a series of illustrations on how to enjoy the gelato, be it in single or double scoops, licking or biting into your gelato scoop.
As funky as their interior, the team at Nom Gelato are adventurous and willing to experiment with new and interesting gelato flavours.
With a total of 16 gelato flavours on display, a single scoop will cost $5 whereas double scoops are priced at $8, with additional $1 for premium flavours.
No ice cream cone is available here, with all served in takeaway cups or takeaway pints available at $17 for classic flavours and $20 for premium ones.
The Classic flavours (Single $5, Double $8) include 72% Dark Chocolate, Piedmont Hazelnut, Mango Sorbet, Tahitian Vanilla, Strawberry & Basil, Roasted Sesame, Cookies & Cream, Pandan with Gula Aren and Cold Brew Coffee.
On the other hand, the premium flavours (Single $6, Double $10) include the Rum & Raisin and Bronte Pistachio.
Unique flavours such as Olive Oil & Rosemary, Mascarpone & Honey Figs, Blue Cheese with Walnut Praline and Whiskey with Bacon caught my attention, feeling skeptical yet interesting at the same time.
My favourite is the Bronte Pistachio (premium flavour) with a smooth and creamy texture, not too milky, yet the flavours are distinct.
The sweetness level of the pistachio is lower than many gelato shops, which makes the earthly and nutty notes more pronounced.
The Whiskey with Bacon (premium flavour) is also worth a mention, with a strong alcoholic kick, complemented by the caramelised bacon bits in it with both a sweet and savoury taste.
The caramelised bacon bits add a nice crunch to the texture.
Perhaps one suggestion, I wished that some bacons bits were smaller in size as the larger bits can be a little too hard to chew.
The safer options: Strawberry with Basil gelato and the Mango Sorbet are fruity and refreshing, smooth with a non-icy texture.
Nom nom, Nom Gelato do serve very interesting gelato flavours using fresh produce and quality ingredients that is tasty and memorable.
