Another day, another ‘hidden’ café. This is for those who want to find a calming, scenic brunch and coffee spot in the heart of town.
Some of you may be familiar with Nassim Hill Bakery Bistro Bar behind Tanglin Post Office. The café is known for fresh bakery offerings, all-day-breakfast and hearty cakes.
They have a brand-new outlet (finally), at a not-too-surprisingly location – on Level 2 of Killiney Post Office.
Another post office, away from the hustle and bustle of Orchard Road, because why not?
This concept operates from 9am to 3pm (except Mondays). This is supposedly a pop-up concept.
Till when? ”We will see the response first…” according to the server.
If the weather is not blazing hot, you can sit at the alfresco rooftop to enjoy a view of Penang Road Open Space.
I guess most locals would want to head on in for some air-conditioned comfort, in which the café is still playing 90s love songs from Take That and K-Ci & JoJo.
I headed down for brunch at an early hour of 9am, and I was the only customer, the server staff slightly caught unaware of anyone turning up.
The Eggs & Mains brunch menu includes the standard stuff like Eggs Benedict ($19), Spicy Huevos Benedict ($20), Steak and Eggs ($24), Salmon Omelette ($19), Cheddar Cheese Bacon Waffles ($20) and Egg White Souffle Omelette ($20).
I had the “Your Favourite Breakfast” ($19) with scrambled, bacon (option of beerbeiser sausage, honey baked ham) and bread basket.
The scrambled eggs tasted like it needed more seasoning and cream, while surprisingly my favourite component happened to be the freshly-toasted sour toast bread which had a nice crisp.
Brunch pasta and pizza options include Penne Chicken Rosa ($16, $21), Prawn Aglio e Olio ($17, $24), Potato Gnocchi ($18), and Personal Truffle Pizza ($14).
The recommended is the Chilli Crab Pasta ($17, $25 for full size) for those who like spice – with spaghetti cooked in glorious, housemade chilli crab sauce.
The sauce is stir-fried with chilli padi, bringing out the spice and flavour, with a hint of sweetness. The pasta dish is then topped with generous portion of jumbo lump crab meat.
Tip: Order some fries to mop up the remaining sauce.
As their strength is in the breads and pastries freshly baked every day, with quality ingredients like French Elle et Vire butter, you may want to give a go at the Sandwiches.
Available options are Hot Reuben ($19), Truffle Portobello Panini ($18), Chicken Pesto Panini ($18), Cheese Crust Grilled Steak Sandwich ($25) and Ham & Cheese Sourdough ($16).
A regular favourite since the beginning of the bakery is the Hot Reuben ($19).
This sandwich includes corned beef with melted Emmental (a type of yellow medium hard cheese), sauerkraut (sour cabbage), onions and Russian dressing on their signature Asahi Kuronama beer bread.
The thing about Nassim Hill Bakery & Bistro is that while the Tanglin outlet attracts families and expats, it has been rather off-the-radar for years, and may lose out on the ‘hip’ factor. We shall see if the Killiney pop-up will allow it to find a different segment of new customers.
