Bedok residents are in for an ice cream treat with another new gelato shop in the area, one that opens till 2AM on Fridays to Sundays.
This is quite an interesting trend with more and more ice cream places opening till midnight or beyond.
Lick D Cream is the latest gelato shop on the block, located diagonally across Hay Gelatoin Bedok.
Two other ice cream cafes Scoop of Joy and ‘pioneer’ FatCat Ice Cream Bar are of walking distance from one another.
The slightly awkward-sounding “Lick D Cream” is named after the owner Dave.
Dave is half a Filipino, and therefore you can see some influence from The Philippines in the flavours.
The 32-seaters space has a street style contemporary design using bold, artistic and colours to create a vibrant touch.
It is further filled with bright red and Tiffany-green coloured stools, with a graffiti-art wall in colours of pink and teal.
Gelato are priced at $4.10 for a single scoop and $7.10 for double scoops, focusing on popular flavours from The Philippines and Singapore.
Local flavours include Milo Peng and Horlicks & Tim Tam whereas premium flavours (+$1) include Roasted Pistachio, Earl Grey Lavender, Strawberry Summer, Oreo Cheesecake and Naughty Nutella.
Both local and Philippines influences can be seen in their add-on, including the usual Waffle Cone ($1), local Pandan Waffles ($5.90) and Pandesal ($3.50) from The Philippines.
Some of the popular ‘Philippine flavours’ include Mango and Ube (pronounced as woo-beh) – bright purple yam with a sweet and mellow flavour.
This is not the first time I had come across Ube gelato, which is also offered at Burnt Cones at Sunset Way.
This came with a lighter shade of purple.
Even though the texture was smooth and creamy, the taste of ube was faint and milky slightly on the sweeter side.
Earl Grey lovers will probably enjoy their Matcha Latte & Earl Grey, with the latter being more pronounced in its flavour with tea fragrance.
The Pandan Waffles ($5.90) tasted very similar to what we can get at local confectionery stores, with a chewy texture instead of being light and airy.
Uncommon in Singapore, the Pandesal ($3.50) is a bread roll in The Philippines made of flour, eggs, yeast, sugar and salt.
Unlike a soft and fluffy brioche bun that we used to sandwich our ice cream (similar to Apiary), the Pandesal here has a more muffin-like texture, being denser and crumbly on its own.
I won’t recommend having it on it own as it can be a tad dry, and is best served with a scoop of gelato.
With another new gelato shop added to the neighbourhood, Bedok residents now have another place to hangout for late night supper.
