Gurney Drive at Punggol Northshore Plaza

You may have heard of Gurney Drive, but after they closed all their outlets in 2015, they faded away from the Singapore food scene. Well, they are back with beloved Penang hawker signatures at their new outlet in Northshore Plaza II

Northshore Plaza II is connected to Samudera LRT Station on the Punggol LRT line, and is home to many food outlets including A&W and Dancing Crab.

At Gurney Drive, the menu is centred around  Penang-style hawker foods, with all the dishes priced below $8!

Start off your meal with the Nonya Kuih Pie Tee ($4.90+). These cracker cups are filled with egg and stir-fried turnip, AKA mang guang. On the side, you get a piquant sambal and sweet black sauce that you can drizzle to your liking.

Of course, the iconic Assam Laksa ($5.90+) makes an appearance on the menu. This dish has garnered its own group of loyal fans since Gurney Drive’s early days, and rightfully so.

Here, the broth is made with red chilli, shrimp paste, lime, and torched ginger flowers, AKA bunga kantan, for a strong sour and sharp flavour. With the thick rice noodles and classic addition of ikan kembung, or mackerel, this is certainly a hearty, appetising dish.

Another Penang hawker classic available at Gurney Drive is the Penang Fried Kway Teow ($7.90+), which comes with cockles, pork lard, and prawns, kissed with a strong wok hei flavour.

Besides noodles, Gurney Drive also has a selection of rice dishes, such as Shrimp Egg Fried Rice ($6.90+). Different proteins such as Pork Belly ($6.90+) are also available, or you can enjoy a simple Penang Sambal Fried Rice ($7.50+) for a spicy option.

Notably, Gurney Drive serves bottles of Ampla Juice ($2.50), colloquially known as buah long long.

It’s not a complete Penang experience without our favourite Penangite desserts. For just  $2.50+, slurp up a bowl of Penang Cendol or Bubur Hitam, the perfect remedy for our hot summer days.
