There are not many indie cafes along Orchard Road and it is always welcoming to see new options appearing in town.
Joining Glyph Supply Co., Hvala, Maison Kayser and Halfpipe Skate Bar, GLAZE is the newest addition to town at TripleOne Somerset.
With the majority of the space occupied by their kitchen, GLAZE offers only 8 seats for dine-in customers, and a selection of pastries daily.
Diners can look forward to their signature Jardin ($8.50 per piece, $65 for whole 6 inches cake), a strawberry shortcake which was the very first cake created on the menu.
Named after a vibrant and beautiful town in the mountains of Colombia, the word “Jardin” means “Garden” in Spanish, reflected in the slices of strawberries neatly layered in between the sponge and cream.
Probably one of the most memorable strawberry shortcake I had eaten of late, the sponge layer was memorably soft and moist, with a milky taste light and refreshing.
The layered strawberry slices added a citrus punch to the overall taste, a pleasant contrast in textures to the fluffy cake.
Another signature cake is the Cusco ($7.80 per piece, $56 for whole 6 inches cake), named after the cultural capital of Peru and the old capital of the Inca Empire.
The colours are a reflection of buildings of Cusco city, a salted caramel cake with a blend of walnut and caramel milk (Dulce deLeche).
The Florida ($8) is also worth a mention, inspired by Florida’s key lime pie which is a tropical version of the classic French tart.
Instead of using traditional selection of berries and fruits in classic French tarts, the Florida comes with a layer of passionfruit on top of the lime curd, encased with a thin layer of buttery tart shell.
If you are up for some citrus and tangy sensation, the Florida is the pick, with a nice combination of crunchy passionfruit seeds and crispy tart crust.
For light bites, GLAZE offers interesting selection such as Chai Latte balls ($2.50) made with Oats, Masala Spice Blend, Dates and White Chocolate, Vegan-friendly Coco-Choco ($1.80) made of Raw Cacao, Coconut, Cacao Nibs and Dates, Classic Madaleine ($2.50), Gluten free Protein Berry Muffin ($6), Carrot Cake Muffin with Walnuts ($5.50) and Matcha White Chocolate Cookie ($2).
Artisanal coffee is also available using an espresso blend from Smitten Specialty Coffee & Tea, with options of Black and White ($7) slightly on the pricier side.
Using a blend of Brazil and Colombia, my cup of Flat White ($7) was smooth, medium bodied with distinctive notes of chocolates.
