Geylang Serai Market will be closed from today till Nov 3 (Wed) after having Covid-19 cases detected over there the past week. The National Environment Agency (NEA) posted flyers at the market, stating that the venue will be undergoing deep cleaning and disinfection of the premises. However, the reason for the closure has not been stated.
Geylang Serai Market To Reopen On Nov 4
A message however, was circulating on Whatsapp stating that the closure was due to Covid-19 cases being detected there. Rumours of the closure started floating around on social media on Saturday afternoon (Oct 30) and NEA officers confirmed it at the market on Sunday morning yesterday.
Some businesses were looking forward to the influx of customers as the Hindu festival of Deepavali is approaching, which falls on Nov 4. Shops that sell mutton typically have a lot of customers from the Hindu community during this period. However, due to the closure, their businesses might be severely affected. Long queues of customers were waiting to enter the market yesterday morning. Customers were no longer seen around the market by 1pm and many shops had also closed for the day.
