Sakanoue Cafe from Tokyo is bringing their popular kakigori to Isetan Scotts

Every other person I know has recently been to Japan, is on a plane to the Land of the Rising Sun, or has plans to head there soon. Stuck here in Singapore, with the thermostat rising yet again to the 30s, I’m just glad that a new shaved ice spot—from Tokyo no less—is coming to town. Slated to launch on 24 February 2023 is Sakanoue Cafe, known for their exquisite kakigori.

The tiny cafe from Bunkyo City, Tokyo, is set to open in the basement supermarket at Isetan Scotts, and is likely to be a kiosk. According to this Instagram post on their official social media account, they will only be there for just over a year, till 9 March 2024.

Sakanoue Cafe is best known for their rotating kakigori flavours that change with the seasons, depending on the ingredients available. For the unfamiliar, kakigori is similar to bingsu, except that where bingsu is milk-based, whereas kakigori is traditionally shaved from a frozen block of mineral water. The resulting ice powder is so fine and fluffy, it’s sometimes called angel snow.

The most common kakigori toppings are fruits, of which there are plenty in Japan, including strawberry, melon, grape and more. Then, there are more exotic variations, including pomegranate, pumpkin, black beans, and even a chestnut, camembert and blue cheese creation!

At this moment, there’s no information on the menu and prices at their Singapore outpost, but we will definitely update this article when we find out.

In other sweet news, there’s a new dessert cafe in town—Catkin by Huishan in Rochor offers dessert omakase, with kueh bangkit gelato and more! Bundt by the Backyard Bakers has also finally opened their second location at Jewel Changi Airport.
